Savannah Georgia

Hello!

My name is Ben. I'm no professional, but I've been sailing Hobies for a few years. I'm here to learn and make new friends. My main interest is help in looking for a small day sailer that my son and I can restore this fall and winter for next year's warm weather.

I guess that's about it! See y'all around.

Re: Savannah Georgia

... we just returned from Savannah after staying there for 4 1/2 months (supervising a refit of a 92ft sloop at Thunderbolt Marine Inc.).

We LOVED Savannah and sure will be back again :-) ...

Good luck in finding a daysailer Ben!

Regards,

Carsten

It's truly a beautiful area. The Army moved me here from Colorado Springs ... that's in Colorado . I may have found a great project / blank canvas in the form of a 1983 Renken '18. It's sailless at the moment and the only soft spot I can find is around the aft starboard cleat. There's missing hardware and no upholstery. The trailer is in great shape, but there's no title. All this for one easy payment of $850, but I'm sure I can talk him down. It's too bad nobody is around to come out and inspect it with me.

Re: Savannah Georgia

Welcome aboard, Ben! This is a great place to learn, and contribute. I'm happy to be the first to get in here and say "there's no such thing as a free/cheap boat", but good luck with your winter project.

There's a good thread on this site (with photos) showing a rebuild project for a Renken 18 -- the other browsers should check it out because it is a beautiful little daysailer! Renken 18

Welcome, best of luck looking for Your next vessel. Perhaps we'll see you on our way north next spring.

Re: Savannah Georgia

A lonnnggg time ago I learned to sail in Savannah. First on my brothers cordova 15 and later on my very own force 5 (laser) dinghy. I spent time at Tybee on the back river and also off the beach.

Best of luck with your sailing adventures.

Re: Savannah Georgia

Geez thanks for the warm welcome and we'll wishes from everyone that cared to read! Here's a link to the boat I'm looking at:

http://savannah.craigslist.org/boa/5319283851.html

It really is a blank canvas! My research as lead me to dead ends and pages that don't work anymore, so that tells me restoration will be no more than difficult.

Re: Savannah Georgia

I believe for 2K tops, you can get a boat that needs very little to sail, and you will end up with way more than that in that boat you linked to, and won't be sailing
I spent years in Savannah and finally Retired there from 1/3 Avn, Vipers.
Don't get into too long a project, the Army will not leave you there for long, although you may be able to get Branch to send you on a Korea short tour, return to Savannah or similar.

Re: Savannah Georgia

A64pilot as in AH64 Apache pilot? Yeah, I'm in 1/3 right now. Well, we're 3-17 now, but that's a long story. Yeah, the boat was a no go. I'm holding out for a solid boat ready to go.
