Sailing Again from Seattle

My wife and I are sailboat owners again after a 7 year hiatus. Our only other boat was a Catalina 27. We enjoyed sailing it around Elliot Bay, the lakes, and particularly our weeklong cruise around the San Juan Islands. But that mid-70s production boat was tough to maintain.

The new boat is a Dudley Dix design, 30' Caribbea, built in 1993 at the Nebe yard in South Africa and sailed on its own bottom across to the US. I'm as interested in working on this well-built boat as I am in sailing it. Electrical will probably be the first big undertaking since there are a number of antiquated and failing components. It's only been two weeks and already a huge education.

Wish me luck!

Eric

Re-naming my boat

My wife and I are completely stumped on coming up with a new name for the boat. We would prefer something with a more classical ring to it rather than some of the word-play type names we commonly see. It needs to be short and pithy and somehow relevant for us. So far, planning the electrical system re-fit has been easy compared to finding the right name.

Can you imagine spelling that over the radio? "Victor, Omaha, Uniform, Victor..."

Actually, I bought a plastic one at the Seafair parade and realized right away it makes an excellent sound signal for raising the bridges, assuming one carries enough hot air on board.

Rou-coo, you'll never believe this, but...

I mentioned your suggestion to the wife and she loved it. We'll sit on the idea for a few days and see how well it sticks. You may have named our boat! If the name sticks, I think that would make you the boat's godfather and you would have to find a way to make it to the official ceremony.

Will keep you posted.

So call'r Sparkie. After redoing the electrical system it maybe appropriate.
