The economics of owning a boat only make sense if you use it a lot (how much is a lot?). If you only plan to sail 2-3-4 weeks a year then charter. If you will spend many weeks or months on the boat the purchase.

Also, if you want to go places where there are no charter boats available then you have to purchase.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Its good to get aboard as many boats as possible and try to sail a few monos and cats the same length. With me, I just like the way monohulls sail and their motion so I don't think I could ever convert to cat. It isn't a matter of cost.
