I've spent a lot of time googling words about all the doo-dads some of these guys talk about. It sucks not even having the REMOTEST clue as to wtf is being talked about.

This is how I KNOW, I'm not a sailor....not even close.

When teaching people to sail I always tell them learning the language is the hardest part. Thus I will often say "pull the blue string" as opposed to "trim the Cunningham"

Of course then there are those of us that struggle with knowing all this jargon in two languages (since we are not native american speakers) or three (sigh)

I used to try to use all the proper nautical terminology because one can communicate more precisely with the correct words. Problem is, the people I was talking to didn't have a clue what I was saying. So now instead of yelling, "trim the port Yankee sheet," I say, "please pull in the red rope over there." As an added benefit my wife doesn't call me Popeye anymore.

I've sailed with a Swedish guy who called the telltales on the sail flocks(SP)

I thought that was great - "How are the "flocks" flying?" "Who gives a "flock?" Get me another beer...

So you can imagine when I read this forum and folks are talking about hanks, fardage, fids, kelsons, cheeks, catherpins, bitts, coaming, cringles, sponsons, reeves, deadeyes, futtocks, tholes, whipstaffs, swigging, worming etc. etc

I'm like....holy schitt...these guys are some SERIOUS sailors. Way WAY beyond my depth.
