Re: Pesky Words

Must be Winter.

This is getting boring though. My boat still has snow and ice on it.

I'm ready to paint!

Three cornered sail flown between the peak of the main and mizzen and the leading foot of the mizzen. Often hanked to the main backstay.

Ok, I remember Talca. Beautiful, small, sea-front village.

Landlocked for now.
I've spent a lot of time googling words about all the doo-dads some of these guys talk about. It sucks not even having the REMOTEST clue as to wtf is being talked about.

This is how I KNOW, I'm not a sailor....not even close.

Re: Pesky Words

When teaching people to sail I always tell them learning the language is the hardest part. Thus I will often say "pull the blue string" as opposed to "trim the Cunningham"

Of course then there are those of us that struggle with knowing all this jargon in two languages (since we are not native american speakers) or three (sigh)

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Re: Pesky Words

I used to try to use all the proper nautical terminology because one can communicate more precisely with the correct words. Problem is, the people I was talking to didn't have a clue what I was saying. So now instead of yelling, "trim the port Yankee sheet," I say, "please pull in the red rope over there." As an added benefit my wife doesn't call me Popeye anymore.

I've sailed with a Swedish guy who called the telltales on the sail flocks(SP)

I thought that was great - "How are the "flocks" flying?" "Who gives a "flock?" Get me another beer...

Funny...someday MAYBE.

Now it's something like this when I charter a boat and have a problem...." Ya Mon!....Pleeze cum feex de boat mon. Whats wrong mon? " Uhhh, the white rope that goes up to the top of the tall pole is tangled in those strings that I think holds up the blue bag. You mean the main halyard mon? "Uhhhh....think so". "AND....

something's wrong when I pull on the left rope that goes to the front sail mon....there's no pulley thing for the rope to go thru" You mean jib car, you have no car? No, I have a car back home! I'm talking about that pulley thing...it's missing!!!" And so it goes...

So you can imagine when I read this forum and folks are talking about hanks, fardage, fids, kelsons, cheeks, catherpins, bitts, coaming, cringles, sponsons, reeves, deadeyes, futtocks, tholes, whipstaffs, swigging, worming etc. etc

I'm like....holy schitt...these guys are some SERIOUS sailors. Way WAY beyond my depth.

When the poop deck hits the wind gen, it's always "Quick, grab that rope"
