Permission To Come Aboard?

Hi everyone,
I'm Rico. I've been sailing a while (self taught), mostly in the Pacific Northwest. Sailed and crewed from Portland, Or to Vancouver Island, BC. I'm in middle Tennessee now and haven't sailed for almost ten years. Boat splashed not too long ago. San Juan 7.7 modified for live aboard. I'll be trying to loose the rust on my skills this season, and am planning to take this boat to the Carib. next spring. I'm also looking for a blue water boat up to 34' for future cruising. I recently retired and am now considering some serious passage making. Consequently, I will be seeking advice on all aspects of long term cruising and live-ability. While I realize some of the benefits of a "full keel", what does one sacrifice for going with modified fins?

I welcome any suggestions for boats and the reason why you'd choose them. I expect to single hand and I want to be comfortable so I'm considering boats from 29' to 34' max.

One sacrifices a great deal of surface drag, I should think, as well as a modicum of unresponsiveness.

No worries, I'm just an airdale who's lost his afterburners and is strikin' for the surface fleet! Thanks, but look for that whistle though ... in case I ever have to be piped ashore!

N. MS here... next to Pickwick...

Lots of disadvantages to a full keel, but for me (1 of my 2 boats is) the good far outweighs the bad.... (VERY abbreviated summary) ...

Bad = maneuverability, rate and radius of turn, overall speed, and windward pointing...

Good = excellent sea motion, stability, draft, and not having to worry about losing a keel !

Don't know anything about Pickwick. Does the Tenn Tom go anywhere near there. I plan to start collecting charts for my trip pretty soon. Thanks for welcoming me to the community. You are in MS now right?

I figured you would be near Nashville. I go down there once in a while to the West Marine if I really need something from there quickly (usually shop around first).

I was looking at putting my boat down in Piercy Priest but I liked that Kentucky Lake had more room to sail and there are nicer marinas. Either way, it would have been an hour drive for me.

Oops! I just made a mistake I used to yell at young sailors about. It's called a "bosun's call." That's what happens when you've been retired 22 years. Still got one here somewhere.
