Papeete: Looking for a Host

Hey all--

May 22nd I'll be flying through Papeete en route to Nuku Hiva to joining the S/V Kyanos.

I'm looking for a place to stay that night before catching an early morning (6:45 am) flight.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks,
Sarah

Re: Papeete: Looking for a Host

There are cheap backpackers hostels near the airport that will pick you up, and drop you off. If you can afford the flights you can afford a hostel.

I can't remember the one I stayed in, but it was listed in Lonely Planet.

Re: Papeete: Looking for a Host

Thanks for the reply, I found a couple hostels near the airport but they require that you book a minimum of two nights, and had no shuttle. I couldn't find the exact name of any hostel in Lonely Planet, it just stated that they existed.

I was looking to stay with a fellow cruiser to get some insight and advice on the islands since I've never been there, and would love to learn anything I can.

Hotel Tiare Tahiti in Papeete <Pah-pieh-teh> is around $150 USD per night; not sure how far it is from FAAA <Fah-ah-ah> International airport. Arrange for a taxi with the front desk before going to bed, for your morning trip to the airport. There are several mini hotels across from the airport, or within a mile or so...but many are not very pleasant. Prepare a sandwich or two prior to departing, the night before; water bottle will be confiscated as you go through security. Enjoy the Marquesas! (I hope that you speak a little French or Tahitian.) If it's not too late, buy the travel guide, "Frommer's South Pacific"; worth the $20 USD. This guide will recommend you hotels, places to visit and actual costs. French Polynesia is very pricey!!! It looks like Hotel Tiare Tahiti is sold out for the time you'll be there. Try Tahiti Airport Motel, instead; around $150 USD/night and space is limited. Mauritz

Re: Papeete: Looking for a Host

I think I stayed at Chez Fifi. Basically just a room under someone's house. It was the cheapest place I found, and was across the road from the airport so you can walk if you want. I had lots of luggage so they picked me up in a small truck. It was fine for a stopover, but if you were staying longer you would probably want something cleaner in a better neighbourhood.

We overnighted once at Tahiti Airport Motel. Cheap, clean enough and a short walk directly across from the airport. No need to set alarm in the morning - a chorus of neighbourhood roosters starts up around 3.30am

oops - just noticed the date - oh well, next time.....
