Greetings.
I joined because my searches often lead me here. I've been on boats all my life, starting when my dad built a canoe when I was four. I joined the Coast Guard and spent six years on boats and ships. After I got out I built my first boat, an 11' sailing dinghy. Buying used is quicker, a 20' sloop, and a 26' yawl followed. I've owned Wandering Star (39' ketch) for ten years, cruising the US East Coast when I can. She's wooden, (as are all my boats) and 50 years old. I've also had an assortment of dinghies, canoes and daysailers. Right now that's two folding prams, two dories, a sailing canoe and a folding kayak.
Looking forward to conversing with you all, maybe even meeting on the water someday.

Hi WanderingStar,

I'm a newbie myself and, like you, have read the Forum for years, but never registered. (Just did the other day and I already hate my username. Sheesh.)

ANYWAY, hello to you. I'm a long-time wooden boat lover, too, although not able to own one myself. I've attended the Classic Yacht Symposium ever since they started, but have just begun looking for a good old boat rather than not have a boat of my own!

Welcome and where are you? It says "NY" but will you be there for the Winter or are you en route south?

Warmly,
Maura from Toronto

Thank you Salty. The boat will stay in water on Long Island this winter. I would love to cruise at least half the year, but my wife would not! In 2015 and 2016 I sailed to Florida and Georgia for the winter, docking the boat and visiting. This year I only cruised to Massachusetts and RI. Having gone south a couple of times I plan to go north again.

Welcome aboard WanderingStar! Have any more photos of your boat to share? She looks like a beautiful boat.

G'Day Wandering Star and welcome to CF. I'm another wooden boat lover and owner, but of a rather different type! But she's timber in her heart and sould, just aided by some epoxy and a wee bit of glass.'

We have friends in Tasmania with another timber Wandering Star... she's a Herreschoff Mobjack and a regular at the Tasmanian Wooden Boat festival, and a thing of beauty.

Enjoy the forum

Jim

Re: Old Sailor, New Member

Thanks guys.

I think WS is a beauty too. Is there a thread to post boat pics?
Also, while she is solid wood, (okay, glass on ply decks) she's not completely traditional. My boat is strip planked cedar on long leaf yellow pine. The strips are 1.25" square, glued together with resorcinol glue and edge nailed with bronze ring nails. That makes her very stiff and dry, with no caulking seams.

To post photos you can always go up to the drop-down menu "Photos" under the Cruisers Forum logo. Those photos will appear as a link under your screen name too. You can also make an album on your profile page for photos. Or you can even make your own social group!
