Helpful group, now if I can figure out why the Cats are so expensive
Does anyone know about renting a 30 ft. mono in Puerto Vallarta ?

Welcome aboard! I can't figure out why the cats are that expensive either. I suppose if you bought two monohulls and put them side by side they'd be that expensive too.

Welcome aboard!! Good to have you here. I am not sure why CATS are so expenisive but I am sure it is all relative to supply and demand. Most have two engines, a swivel mast, and it cost more to dock them as well ( do to the beam).

If you measure a boat on a dollar per pound basis, cats and monohulls cost roughly the same. Yes, I understand there are other factors.

I think the confusion is caused by comparing boats on a per foot basis. Length is not everything. Width is also a factor in how much boat you are getting. You get more boat per amount of length with a catamaran because they are wider. Therefore it makes sense why a cat costs more per amount of length.

It might make some sense to measure length times beam when comparing costs.

Price per lb. is what a guy can relate to.
I have seen a cat and power cruiser submerged in PVR Puerto Vallarta for years at the marina, maybe they were too damaged to bring back.

Another factor to consider is when you double a boats length, you roughly cube its displacement. Therefore a boat twice the length will be around nine times the cost. Weight is directly proportional to cost of materials and labor. Although there are probably some economies of scale with building a boat twice the length. Again, these are all rough estimates because there are many other factors.

That sounds right David, That factor reminds me of trying to gain speed.
40% more power may result in 18% more speed .
That can be a money pit for many toys, and lead to other problems.
Why is it fun for us to do that ?
I have bad habit, if its a 3 HP trolling motor, or a motorcycle,
A guy wonders what makes it go faster. I have spent many days making prop shapes to improve efficiency, but never gained much. I made a mold to make aluminum prop blades , it was a pain to get it right.
I like the purity of Sailing and Flying something underpowered,
then your down to the Art of it.
