NY New Guy

Greetings all. Just a quick intro, as I search through countless posts, and websites to get up to speed.

I live in the Southern Tier of NY state, and have recently acquired a 1970 Islander Excalibur 26'. Needs the interior refitted, a couple soft spots on the deck repaired, an outboard, and a bath. But it's a complete boat other than that, and I'm anxious to get her home in the next couple weeks from her marina, and start working under cover through the winter.

Ironically, I am also heading tomorrow to pick up a 1968 Hurley 22. Sole reason is for the custom-trailer, which will be modified to fit the Excalibur (the beam is near identical, the trailer supports the heavier Hurley, so I just have to add a little adjustment for the extra inches of draft, and make sure the length is fine). However, the Hurley is supposed to be in near-sailing shape, just missing things inside like a head, etc. So, I'll make sure it's stable, and either sell it sans trailer, part it out/scrap it (last resort), or if the Ex takes longer to work through than I hope, I'll likely float the Hurley and sail it while continuing to restore the Ex.

I do have to get more comfortable with sailing in general. I'm easily capable of the basics, but I've got a LOT more to get under my belt before I consider myself seaworthy. This/these will be my starting point, and I can't wait. It's been a long time coming for me, a dream for the last 20 years, to get back on the water, after my dad had to let his Mac 25 go. I've missed sailing since those days as a kid with him out on the weekends every so often.

I'm actually down near Binghamton. More than likely I'll be putting into Cayuga, as my uncle has a place on the East shore, but then again, I may look into Oneida lake as well, as it looks as if I can head up to Ontario if I decided to take a couple weeks off at a time. I dunno, that's still months away.

Ithaca to Oswego (Lake Ontario) is a 2 day trip, one day up Cayuga Lake and one day down the Seneca and Oswego Rivers. East end of Oneida Lake to Oswego is a long one day trip. All the sailing is at the east end of Oneida.

The closer the boat is to your home, the more you will use it.

That's kind of my thinking. I can make Ithaca in about an hour from home. My uncle is halfway up Cayuga. I forgot that Cayuga is still linked, just a lot longer a haul to do so. I'm thinking that the trip to Ontario would only be once a year perhaps, and would be where I'd go up, spend a week out, and come back.

I'm still looking into prices at different marinas on both lakes, as well as conditions. Cayuga is a little longer, Oneida is wider. I'm a little closer to Ithaca, but Oneida is a new one I've never been to and a friend mentioned they might be a bit cheaper to slip.

A lot to figure out, thankfully I have time. Gonna be a VERY early morning tomorrow tho lol.
