No wading here, just jumped!

Hi to all, after much "lurking" on this board, we are finally boat owners and look forward to participating. Gary and Sherry here from Franklin, NC. We purchased a 1993 Lagoon 37' TPI in Key Largo, FL. Took her straight to dry dock for some much needed TLC. Look forward to meeting any and all.

Congrats on the new boat, and welcome to this motley crew.

What sort of TLC, and when will you be able to hit the water?

Re: No wading here, just jumped!

Welcome to CF Gary and Sherry!!!

So ....

Thus far... Have you judged the waters correctly??? Are you still going down looking for the bottom, flailing to keep your wallet.... landed in ankle deep pain... Or found it about just right???

What boats before this???

Re: No wading here, just jumped!

Thank you to all the welcoming posts. Um, to answer some of the questions:
This is our first boat (yes, really)
Work we are doing on it, wow, where to begin: Props redone, sails stitching checked, bottom paint, headliner, new acrylic in hatches, windows rebedded, replumbed, rewiring, new electronics (still dont know which way to go on these), fiberglass work, buffing......probably better to answer what aren't we doing. Well, beds and soft goods inside were OK, fridge and stove works
Not particularly enjoying living on the hard this month and hope to be on the water by Dec 1 but......
We are hoping be in the Bahamas learning by first week of Jan and stay until we are ready (competent) ...then, heading down the Island chain or wherever life takes us
Would post interior pics but frankly everything is so tore up

Re: No wading here, just jumped!

I owned an older 42 lagoon. The 37 is pretty similar. a couple things to check out: The Marelon seacocks often seize up, or the handle/shaft breaks when you try to turn it. Check these well while you are out of the water.
The headliner/hull liner problems are caused by the foam backing on the vinyl deteriorating from heat. I found you could remove the headliner/hull liner and rub off/ vacuum off most of the foam (what a mess!) then reglue the liner with no foam. It's a common problem with all foam back hull/headliners. Without the foam backing, the liner will show any lumps etc that are on the fiberglass... keep that in mind. Buy yourself a small shop vac... a little 12v unit isn't worth having. Which engines do you have?
The alternative to reusing the old vinyl is to just get that fuzzy hull liner used in powerboats etc. To reline the hull with that, the pros just put adhesive on the hull/liner and stick it on there, then cut the surrounding corners with a sharp razor knife.... much easier than trying to cut each panel perfectly and get it in the right place! However... using the old vinyl is much easier in the end.

Re: No wading here, just jumped!

Um, thanks for the info. Yes, we had to take liner down. What's the fuzzy liner stuff used in power boats you are talking about? Been wondering what the heck to replace it with. The motors are Perkins KB3029 20HP. I was wondering if others have felt this is enough power for the weight of the boat? Do you have any idea of gallons per hour?

Re: No wading here, just jumped!

Wowza...

You two really jumped in with both feet!!! Lotta work going on for a first time owner/refitter!

20's should be plenty for your boat... Others will have better numbers, but I suspect running both at cruising speed 6ish+kts would give you about 1 gal/hr

Google boat hull liner fabric and there are lots of hits. I think the fuzzy stuff is the same fabric that is also used as a glue down exterior carpet although it's really thin. This site has 2 vids on installation.
HullBlanket Headliner Hull Liner Carpet Type - Conforms to Shapes#
