Newly Registered, Long Time lurker. Intoduction

Hello there,

A number of years ago while working remotely in American Samoa I made a new friend. Well, friends. The Brown family to be specific. They shared with me their story of sailing adventures that had started in New York around 3 years prior to our chance meeting. Aboard a 44' St Francis Jen and Otis along with the kids seemed to really living the dream.

I often thought about these folks. Where are they now, what interesting foods are they sampling, what are they doing, how great was today's sunrise? Like most folks it was only a passive thought. No action on my part. No plans to join them.

June 26 2013 I was diagnosed with a rare cancer, at the time with an uncertain prognosis. The aforementioned family adventure kept creeping into my mind as I struggled to come to grips with my own future. I regretted not giving it a try and maybe never getting the chance.

It's all these events that lead me here today; finally signing up for the site and introducing myself.

I have beaten cancer, now I'm going to beat the rat race and will officially become a "cruiser" as you guys like to call it.

About me:

Born and raised in Texas
Served 8 years in the army(Biomedical Engineer)
Moved to Oahu and from there worked all over the pacific(met the browns)
Currently residing in NorCal (Sacramento Valley)

I am in the long long process of selecting the right first boat for my wife and I, two cats, and if I can't talk the wife out of it, a dog. I love the dog but I'm afraid he is too big and too wimpy for this adventure.

As I've scoured these forums over the last few years I feel I have gotten to know several of you via your numerous helpful posts. Excuse me in advance if I talk with you like were old friends.

Sincerely,
Juston

Welcome and congratulations. Good luck with the boat search, and FYI, dogs are pretty happy on catamarans (so are wives)

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Monte: The wife im sure will love the stability of the catamaran. The dog however is broken, he hates car rides. What sort of self respecting pooch hates car rides?

I'll be starting a boat selection thread in the multihull section of the forum soon. Feel free to drop by to offer advice and bang me on the head when I get carried away or start running in the wrong direction.

I like your name NormalName! It's practical in a logical Engineerish sort of way.....ok I am one too.

Welcome to CF and congratulations on beating cancer.

You have the right plan - go ahead & do it. You can always make more money, but you can't make more time. So best of luck and I look forward to hearing more on how things go for you & the wifey.

Hah, leave it to another Engineer to appreciate my name. There is a long convoluted, illogical, quite childish story that goes along with the logicalish name NormalName.

Agreed, you cannot make more time. I've worked my rear off to get the right career, in the right corporation, with the right paycheck/benefits. Where did it all land me? In a hospital bed. Time to live!

I may come back from this trip and find myself underemployed in relation to my current position but boy will I have a hell of a story to tell. Im thinking the adventure wins out over the paycheck.
