Newbie on Board

New to the scene. Planning my retirement from teaching elementary students and living aboard. I hope to see this all come to fruition in the next couple of years. I am so excited about this new chapter of my life. I live on the coast of North Carolina, USA and love my life on the ocean as it is here but long to travel. My 19 year-old daughter and I just returned from a 10 day sailing cruise in the Virgin Islands and now she has caught the "bug" as well. She is looking into how her engineering degree can get her to the islands doing some kind of internship- doing anything!!!

She visited Australia two years ago and wanted to attend University there but her father wouldn't go for it. So now she and I will sail there once she completes her degree and I retire at the young age of 54.....

I love this forum as for it's wide variety of topics and depths of knowledge. I look forward to learning a lot from browsing here.

Because I live in a coastal town, my local community college offers great courses on getting my captains license and other courses. I plan on taking advantage of this over the next few years. Any suggestions and tips are greatly appreciated!

Until then,

Howdy!

Sounds like that would be a great trip for you and your daughter. Given your access to the ocean and local knowledge, I am sure you can learn a lot in the next few years before your launch.

Best wishes for your dream to come true!

Welcome aboard! You're in a perfect place to get started, with all of the treasures of the Inner and Outer Banks and the Chesapeake Bay to the north, and then the Keys, Bahamas and Caribbean. Go for it, and happy cruising!

Welcome aboard, Bum.

I'm just down the Cape Fear a piece, and frequently looking for crew.

Mostly your unobservant-ness, coupled with the lack of posting by either of us, I'm sure.

Now, about that fifty bucks...

Welcome.

Don't put too much emphasis on 'qualifications', they don't mean as much as getting out and doing. Doing some course on navigation, weather and radio, and perhaps diesel's will help.

Yea... I think you nailed it... I hate when life gets in the way of mindlessly sitting in front of a computer posting away for self entertainment purposes...
(post count ratio to be strictly ignored)

I was able to scrape together and mail off $27 worth of coupons for the indian casino near you... Let me know how the buffet is...

Well, it's a rainy day here in the Land of Livermush. We could hijack Bum's introductory thread and pump up the respective post counts...

Well-played, by the way, with the casino coupons. Even better if they're past their use-by date.

Yea.. Rainy weekend here too... Opted for the "stay home and address the increasingly ignored PILE of not so fun homestead stuff"

I actually think we might already scared off the new beachbum with our antics... and highjack-inks...

re the coupons... I say we head straight from the boats unbathed, unshaven, and rumsoaked... insisting that we'll take our business elsewhere if they don't honor the cooopin's...
