Newbie from OC, NJ

Hi All,

Found this forum by googling for "sailing route from Florida to BVI".. The thread turned out to be "Route from Florida to BVI" and was VERY informative as a start to my planning.... Thank You..

Spent the last 25 years rearing children.. the last 3 or so winding down a business and selling personal property.. Chartering and picked up some sailing certs.. etc..

Been reading sailing rags since I can remember.. Time and time again I remember reading that "you have to set a date" or "you'll never leave".. After numerous 5 year plans.. that continued to be "5 year plans", year after year.. Last fall I set the date as October of 2019... Sold the house end of April. Have boat under contract at the moment.. and planning my escape..

So that's my story so far...

Welcome aboard CF, Jeff. My husband, Jim, and I are long term cruisers, presently in Australia.

For those of us who are not familiar with NJ, what is OC? If it were So. Cal., it might be Orange County.

Ann

There is an Ocean County in NJ as well, although I've never heard it referred to as OC. Maybe a local Jersey thing. I'm a Brooklyn-born NYC native.

Hello Ann (and Jim).. Diesel Bill has it correct.. Ocean City, New Jersey.. Guess it's local knowledge..

As the story goes... In 1879, four Methodist ministers (Ezra B. Lake, James Lake, S. Wesley Lake and William Burrell) purchased Peck's Beach (island) to create a Christian seaside resort and camp meeting place..

OC is about a 15 minute drive to Atlantic City, NJ... and an hour plus East to Philadelphia PA. The Great Egg Harbor Inlet separates OC and Absecon Island (where Atlantic City is located)..

OC is a a very nice family seashore town where alcohol sales are prohibited (consumption is allowed within your property limits).. Known for its beaches and boardwalk.. When I was young there was the Blue Law which prohibited the sale of almost everything but necessities on Sundays.. They've since eased that, albeit at the request of local business owners..

I've had my Hobie 17 Sport on the beach here for probably 20 years.. Have had some real fun and adventure sailing the coast line and back bay...

We are here for the rest of this Summer.. while we prepare for a fall departure to the Caribbean..

Thanks for the warm welcomes from everyone!
