New to the Forum - An Ingrid 38

Hi All:

My bride and I are new to the Forum, just bought our first last boat - a Blue Water Ingrid 38, S/V Elsa. This is our fourth boat together... a very positive trend indeed.

We are Seattle people and have spent many years sailing Puget Sound, primarily day-sailing in South Sound. The Ingrid is a whole new ball game - very traditional ketch rig, 40 year-old Volvo MD3B diesel.

The boat was stripped to the hull and was in mid-refit when we purchased. Previous owner was a marine carpenter, so the wood is beautiful, but nothing was finished. Managed to get it sailing in six weeks (!!) but now we need to circle back and do everything right. We've added all of the running rigging, and have begun replacing standing rigging and sails. Ugh.

Managed to have our first mechanical failure last week - a gearbox decided to let go on us, so I am beginning our mechanical adventure about 3-months ahead of schedule. (I was hoping to tear into the engine this winter). It's part of the deal, and we're ready for a long slow rebuild to ensure a bomb-proof machine. An engine-room can be a beautiful thing!

If there are any fans or experts on the Volvo MD3B and the MS gearbox, I'm a grateful and attentive student. Otherwise, we're open to suggestions, cajoling and any encouragement that comes our way.

Thanks in advance, and fair winds!

Welcome indeed from a fellow Ingrid owner. They are excellent boats with a lot of personality. I love the ketch rig but there is a lot of wire to it. I'll see you out there.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
I've sailed a bit on them and you'll probably be hearing from Celestialsailor whose boat it was. He changed out the engine to Yanmar and did a beautiful job in the engine room. It lightened up the stern a bit.
They can be a handful to single-hand and that big old tiller was tough in rough weather. Do you have wheel steering?
Lots of wire to replace and best of luck in your refit.

Welcome SeaOx...
I'm in year three of the refit of my Ingrid. A cutter rigged Orca.
I'm in Port Angeles right now, and have spent time in Eagle Harbor, and the South Sound.

I hope to see you out there.........

John
