New to the Forum

Hello,

Just thought I would post here to introduce myself.

I am new to the sport of sailing and plan to spend the best part of next year in Europe learning to sail with the view of eventually buying a boat of our own to sail and charter.

Any advice as to schools, literature, things you wish you knew before you strated out and helpful websites would be greatly appreciated. Look forward to seeing you out at sea!

Paul

Re: New to the Forum

Paul,
Welcome. In which part of Europe will you be learning how to sail? The Atlantic side will have the wind meaning lots of sailing but the Med usually has too much wind or none, meaning lots of motoring. If your eventual goal is to go cruising, I would recommend any of Lynn and Larry Pardey's books. They are classics and fun to read as well.
Cheers.

Welcome! We have our boat in Spain right now. Best advice is to sail, sail sail. Catch a ride with the best sailors you can go with, do a little racing. Charter for a week.

When you are ready to buy you should think hard and realistically about how you will use your boat, weekend trips around the bay? Racing? 2weeks to two months? Fulltime cruiser? Open water long distance sailor?

We chose full time cruiser so high on our list was comfort, a good bed, an easy sail plan, plenty of storage. We have been very happy with our choice. She is not fast but the ride is a Cadillac.

Have fun.
