New To Sailing in Seattle

Hello!

I've been following the sailing community for a long time. My father spent 21+ years as a merchant marine and I grew up in the coast of southern Sweden.

It was always my fathers dream to own a sail boat. He recently beat two forms of cancer and I decided now was the time to full fill my dads dreams.

I had done a lot of research and came across a 27ft Jeanneaufantasia.

Today I put down a deposit and made a offer on it. It feels a little crazy to buy a boat with NO experience what so ever but I owed it to my father to see him smile again.

I currently live in Seattle and the boat will be moored on Lake Union. I have been looking into some sail classes but all seem full or over for the season.

What would your recommendations be?

Cheers guys,

Look through the local sailing/cruising publications such as 48north.com and look up contact info on Judy Nasmith. She is a broker and cruiser and may be able to help you find local knowledge. She is one of the nicest representatives of the area. If you can't find her send me a PM.

Great post.

Join a yacht club, make friends and volunteer as crew for races.

Good luck and welcome aboard.

This is a great meetup group:
Pacific Northwest Sailing Group (Seattle, WA) - Meetup

ignore the PSSG in meetup - the guy running it only allows people he likes. The group I linked is made up of the people who actually enjoy sailing, not following rules.

Welcome aboard! For sailing BOOK knowledge, look up the local chapters of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and the US Power Squadron. They give classes year round on basic seamanship/navigation. These classes cost very little, by comparison to ASA classes, as they do not provide hands-on experience. Sign-up at your local marinas/sailing clubs as an extra hand/crew to get some hands-on training. ASA classes are a wonderful place to start, if you can find some locally. Keep us posted on your progress! Good luck to you and your dad!

Aloha and welcome aboard!
I kept my boat there for a winter while I was over in Bremerton. I'd drive or take the ferry over once a week to check on her.
Keep a good lookout on your boat, especially for freezing freshwater, moisture and such. You don't want to blow your tanks or let mold grow aboard.
kind regards,
