New to sailing

Hi to you all , no Vessel at the moment , will be looking for advice as and when I see something I like , this is all new to me and now I have the time I'm going to give it a go , I'm looking for something that will do a few days at sea for my wife and myself, so any advice would be welcome .

Hi Rotti... Welcome to CF..
Well you've lots to choose from in the UK... browse E-Bay UK... some nice little boats popping up lately..
as your a starter I'd suggest a good bilgekeeler like a Hurley 22 that your can trail and sail.... some good examples around for under £5K with the trailer.. fast and easy to handle/maintain.
Forgiving if you run aground on an ebb tide.. it don't fall over..
Sitting headroom only but okay for a couple of weeks holiday.. if your into/upto basic-ish
The Leisure 22 is better headroom and a modern layout but does not sail as well.
If trailing is not an option then go for a Westerly Centaur (26ft).. standing headroom.. separate toilet, decent galley and dinette... good v-berth.
Clunky looking up top but sweet hull..

Hi Boatman61, got my eye on a westerly pageant priced at £6500 it's all kitted out also has auto pilot , I don't want to buy something just to put on for 12months rather get something that I will happy with for a long time , to be honest with you my head is spinning with looking at boats as some have this , some have that and some have the other fitted, will get there in the end.

A sound hull, good roller furler, sails and running/standing rigging, separate loo, speed/depth log, VHF, autohelm and handheld GPS or a laptop and GPS puck then get Nimble Navigator online complete with world charts..
That's all you need basically.. apart from safety gear.

Hi boatman61 Thanks for that advice will keep it in mind whilstl looking.
Being a novice would you recommend any courses to take , as there is a nautical collage just up the road at Fleetwood ?

Get down to an RYA School and get your Competent Crew and Day Skipper/ICOC tests behind you... that should give you enough knowledge for boat handling and navigation skills to play around the UK.
After that its which way you want to take it....
Commercial you can go up to YM Ocean....
or for leisure sailing Day Skipper/ICOC is good enough to take you round the world.
Tests/tickets are for the bureaucrats to play with..
experience/confidence are for you to acquire and play with....

PS: For sailing the UK waters you don't 'need' anything
