Hi Aron... welcome to CF..
Mate... forget the big boats for now... look at 24ft to 27ft... you know jack **** and you'll do less damage...
Seriously... size is relative... I sorta live on a 21ftr... 4'[6" headroom but i can stand up in the cockpit...and I'm 6ft 2 and 64 yrs old... you a pussy..??
You know **** about sailing but your a tough ex soldier... rough it a while... its cheaper and if you do not like the lifestyle you can bail out with minamal costs...
Examples you should be looking at are...
1970 Bristol 24 Sail New and Used Boats for Sale - www.yachtworld.co.uk
1974 Bristol 26 Sail New and Used Boats for Sale - www.yachtworld.co.uk
Forget all the bull... learn on a good basic boat and work up..

HAHAAH Thanks for the insight! I may actually do that, that would allow me to start sooner and save up for my "last boat". Will a 24-27 footer be sufficient for Bay and Sound sailing?

Thanks!

lol Thanks for the insight! I may actually do that, as it would allow me to start sailing sooner and allow me to save up for my "last boat". Would a 24-27 footer still be ok for use in the bay or sound?

Thanks!

Re: New to Sailboating....Planning on using it for Therapy.

What matters more than size is condition and quality of the boat. People have sailed around the world on very small boats, I think the record is under 20'.

But in some areas size does matter. You get more headroom, living and storage space, and the boat tends to bounce around less when the water gets bumpy.

Just for comfort and living space, if you are going to be spending the night on the boat, cruising for days or more I would not go smaller than 24-27'. Much bigger than that might be a little trickier to handle for a first boat although plenty of sailors have started with their first boat a lot bigger.

Good luck and feel free to come back to the forum with any questions. Great bunch of people here with a lot of good information.

We were looking at a 31' island packet. You feel this is good enough for ocean passage? We have alot of experience on 24 to 27 foot boats.

Island Packet is an excellent boat.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry about your disability. I had friends could back from Nam who went into sailing and found comfort there. Hope you do too. You're in the right place.

Re: New to Sailboating....Planning on using it for Therapy.

Just a quick plug for CF's most famous (?!) wannabee sailor (Ronnie Simpson) alumni - who started in pretty much the same position as OP (ex US army in Iraq - IIRC got blown up a tad ).........

....turned up on CF 4 years back with half an idea (being generous!) and a dream, bought a boat, set sail to Hawaii, encountered a storm, boat broke, got rescued by a slow boat heading to China, cycled to Europe - and then got back into boats and now appears to have more offshore experiance than many of us here .

The rescue:-

Now hanging out a shingle doing deliveries:-

Homepage seems to have a US Veterans / sailing connection, might be worth getting in touch.

Re: New to Sailboating....Planning on using it for Therapy.

I don’t. My hubby Scott and I are both active Duty Navy. We are both deployed but when we return we will be starting our search for our boat. We have sailing lessons scheduled when I get back this coming summer. We will be cruising as soon as we retire. I actually hit 19 years today but we will stay a little longer to increase the retirement check which in turn increases the sailing kitty! My father-in-law keeps his boat at Sarah’s Creek in Gloucester. He likes it. The base marinas seem to have a waiting list and do not allow live aboard. We are looking at the marina next to Little Creek since that is where Scott is stationed.
Good Luck and maybe we can meet for lunch someday when I return from deployment.

Re: New to Sailboating....Planning on using it for Therapy.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Thanks for your service. You've gotten a lot of good advice here and will agree that sailing is the best therapy ever.
Good luck in whatever boat you choose. Get one that is well cared for and minimum size for what you want to do. You can always move up in size when you and your wallet are ready.
Lessons from a local MWR will let you know quickly if you are cut out to sail.
kind regards,
