New to Forum - Looking for Knowledge on Intracoastal Living

My name is Troy I am a student and am looking to find out what there is to know about ICW living, the up sides and the down sides, and I am hoping to live on a vessel next school year as my place of residence. As you can imagine my funds are tight. I am really interested to know. I am not new to sailing but am new to the cruising class. Grew up sailing on the lakes of Ohio on Lightings, Highlanders, and lasers. More recently I have been sailing on the Atlantic and ICW on 420's. Cheers

If you are talking about year round life on the hook... The Titusville Municipal Marina has an anchorage just outside of it's basin, where you can live anchored out. For a fee, you get pumpouts, a parking space, a dinghy dockage spot, and showers. I wouldn't go further north than that. Even here, it gets mighty cold out there with no heat. For comfort in the winter... there is Boot Key Harbor, in Marathon Fl. They offer all of the above as well... if on a mooring. M.

That's pretty far up the Cape Fear River. You might want to check out some cruising guides (I think there is one called Cruising Coastal North Carolina) and Active Captain to see what is reasonable and accessible before you look at too many boats.

Good luck - living aboard is great.

I wish that I had done the same while in school there - I rented a house on Wrightsville Beach and in the end had only a degree to show for it . A least with a boat you have a hole in the water to show for al the money you spent. Later I kept a boat at Masonboro Boat yard which is close to UNCW . Sea Path would be another excellent choice - It's close to the beach without actually being on it. Both are great locations for day sailing with no bridges to the ocean and easy access to the ICWW. If you go to the Cape Fear River side you will have issues with either longer distance to school or a long way to the ocean . So to sum it up : Wrightsville = white sand and thongs, Cape Fear River = black water and mud .
