Talking New Sailor Saying HELLO !!!

hello all !!! I am the new owner of a used cal2-27,sloop rigged boat.since this is my first sailboat of my own , you fello's and ladie's are in for many STUPID questions,[not the ;what happens if I pull the plug OUT] but silly things most of you will have done for year's !!! at 63 and single,I am ready to start at the "bottom" and work thru the mast.it is a 1977year modeland needs a re-build on her ATOMIC -4 engine]gas],might be better to "up-grade" and not mess with it.having owned the boat--now named "the MOKEN",I have found a re-built moter for $3,000.00,'local" oriental,nc 28571.it needs the "head" repaired&replaced, but parts are on board.the boat has been used a lot ,the rigging looks good&serviceable, the sails are both in 'GOOD" condition, all the cordage will be replaced.some of the electrical systems will need replacing, all in good time.I got the boat on a whim ,and it appear's next to horse owner's I have just joined a very expencive "HOBBY" group.THANKS in advance [for not throwing things "at the dummy lol later gumby/zenkayaker "enjoy your day's,and, remember your night's" MOVE or DIE "the only EASYDAY,was,YESTERDAY"

Re: New Sailor Saying HELLO !!!

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. NC has lots of places to get work done and find used boat gear. You should be able to piece together an engine there somewhere. I'd shop around for the very smallest diesel you can find that might have some live left in her and install it. I've seen several 2-27s advertised with small Yanmar engines so I know they fit.
kind regards,

Welcome Zen,,i would go with SkiprJohn's suggestion and convert to diesel,,its the more dependable (less to go wrong) choice of the two.

Re: New Sailor Saying HELLO !!!

For Diesels you could consider a drive train from a Diesel garden tractor, they even have a hydraulic drive system already,,called "Hydrostatic drive" perfect for use as a marine power source.

Re: New Sailor Saying HELLO !!!

I rebuilt my Atomic-4. It's not a deal breaker. I don't do the "diesels are better" argument, I just dance with the one that brung me. Due prudence with fire safety and keeping water out of the fuel and you'll have a good motor there. Converting to another type means a bit of re-engineering, and that's just a pain in the a$$.
