New Sailor on Lake Ontario

Greetings,

My sailing interest began a few years ago. I took the Basic Keelboat course at a local YC. I have done limited crewing, read lots of books and lots of very helpful posts on this forum. I just purchased a Hunter 26 and will finally be getting some quality time on the water to perfect my skills and have some fun. Advice is welcome, particularly from Hunter 26 or similar boat owners. Thanks.

Hello Rhett, like you we just purchased our Coronado 25 a few months ago and are sailing out of St. Catharines Ontario. We are having a blast! Tore our headsail last weekend with no regrets, the wind and gusts were awesome. We are working this old girl hard, trying to learn lots in the next few years before we buy our next, bigger boat. Good luck to you...Allan

Hey Rhett! Welcome....

I can`t give you much advice yet as I just recently joined this forum and picked up Catalina 25. I`m on Lake Ontario as well and i`m out of Oakville. Where are you locatedÉ

Well since you`ve taken the course already you`re well ahead. All that you need to do now is spend some time on the lake and get used to your boat. I`ve been on the lake last couple of weekends already but just taking the course at Humber this coming up weekend.

The only advice I can give you is don`t forget to put sun block on your face. I put sun block everywhere except for my face. Now after last Sunday I have permanent sunglasses on my face. :-) :-) ok ok... jokes aside...

Enjoy your new boat!!!!

Daniel

Rhett,

If you can master the Great Lakes you are qualified to sail any place else. You just need to add salt and the world is just around the corner. Now that you have a boat it's mostly about showing up. Logging sea time is the best time there is.

Thanks for the kind replies and advice. We are sailing out of Rochester. I'll try to post again to report on our first few experiences. Best wishes to all.
