New Sailor, Old Aviator

Brand new Sailor here, to say hello.

Just got my my 'little ship' Zeemeeuw, She is a 1974 Steel Motorsailer (Ketch) 12m. in length, 4m beam, 1.45m draft and fully loaded weighs in at about 18T.
40 years old and I am the second owner! Ford Lehman 120 Engine also 40 years old and runs like sewing machine. Her Home-Port is in , Warten, Friesland in The Netherlands. This is my retirement project to go cruising/sailing long distance in about3 years time. Hope to use this forum to have my questions answered, and may be of help to others.

Welcome to CF Raoul. As a pilot the transition should be easy for you. You already have an understanding of systems, both on your new boat and weather, but most important you understand lift created by a wing. Now just visualize your wing as vertical instead of horizontal, and the lift component as propulsion.

Slowly getting ready, to move forward at 5kts instead of 500kts, It makes a hell of a difference in the scale of charts I use!!
By te way, how do I "downsize" a JPEG to upload here?

There is a lot of free software to resize picture files, but what I prefer is to just load them to an outside free site like "Photobucket" and link them back here like this....


Thought you might like this picture. The advantage of using an outside site is any forum you participate in you have all your pictures available instead of having to dl to each and every forum. Also by doing it this way if someone wants to see the larger file size all they need to do is click the top left corner for it.

A long time ago, Jim segued from drag car racing to sailing. He said afterwards that he had never thought one could be scared for so long at only 5 knots speed.....

What kind of car did Jim used to race? My little Track-T in my avatar weighs 1790 lbs and is powered by a Scott Shafiroff 427 into a Tremec. High 9 second ride.

Our new baby is a Dutch Steel built 'Spitsgatkotter' (Trawler-Ketch). 12mx4mx1.45m.
with 2500ltr diesel tank and a 1000ltr. water tank she displaces about 18500kg. had her for 10 months, and yes, only took her out 3 times, but berthing still scares me silly. will be taking her out onto the North Sea for a week at the end of this month to practice. There is a picture floating around on this website somewhere, have been trying to upload it just now, not sure if it worked. 'Zeemeeuw' is Dutch for Seagull. Like the Beech, flew one of those in the 70's out of Wilmington Delaware, now its a B767-300 worldwide

Raoul, welcome to the forum. I flew international long haul for the past 25 years, the last 15 in the in the B767. Now retired for three years.

The transition to sail was a snap, divided all speeds by 100, salary divided by 3, ETA calculated in days, fun multiplied by 100.

Berthing, as I'm sure you know, is nothing more than mass management and cost assesment ( how much you can afford to pay for damage determines approach speed).
