New Member in Phoenix

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the forum and new to sailing. No boat, no skills, but lots of interest. Any advice on private sailing instruction or references in Southern California would be very much appreciated.

Re: New Member in Phoenix

Hello LeePHX,

I started on the sailing journey about a year ago (live in Scottsdale) and found an American Sailing Association school at Lake Pleasant for 101 (Sailing Arizona).

I then took a class for 103 & 104 in San Diego from Lee Pearce at Learn to Sail San Diego and had a good experience.

If I were to do it all again, I would probably take 101 through 104 in San Diego.

I now charter from Harbor Sailboats in San Diego because they have competitive prices, a good selection of sailboats, and helpful people. San Diego Harbor and along the coast is a great place to sail with relatively predictable sailing conditions.

Picked up some good books about sailing basics (probably can find a few at a library) and the ASA 101 course provides a sailing fundamentals book that is basic but reads well.

Good luck!

Re: New Member in Phoenix

Thanks for the advice, cmac. I found the Lake Pleasant sailing instruction group in my research, but thought I would try to find instruction in San Diego. Think I will check out your recommendations. My girlfriend and I did a sail in San Diego Harbor a few weeks ago and loved it. She took a turn at the helm and had the boat nicely heeled, so no convincing needed for her! I have read the ASA book, Chapman's book on piloting, even Sailing for Dummies (which I thought was really good). Now it's time to get out there and learn! Just wish we weren't a 5 hour drive across the desert away from salt water.

Thanks for replying.

Lee

Welcome. After you master the basics, check out Orange Coast College in Newport Beach, CA. They run "Alaska Eagle" all over the globe offering offshore courses: 2010-2011 Itinerary | www.occsailing.com

Cheers.

Re: New Member in Phoenix

Nice to see another landlocked sailor from Phoenix on the forum Lee. I too am in the Phoenix area (Gold Canyon). My wife and I did our ASA certification 2 years ago, but we did it with Bluewater Sailing in St Thomas. Covered basic keelboat through bareboat certification over a 7 day period - all while sailing in the BVI's. Sailing all day, Foxy's at night, repeat. Bluewater was great - the instructor was very knowledgable, he was even able to teach my wife basic navigation... Highly recommended!
