New member but old cruiser

Hi Folks - My name is David Sobolewski and along with my wife Suzi McDuffie we have been cruising for over 6 years now on our s/v Sidewinder which is a Fastpassage 39. We started our adventure in So. Calif. and have since followed the typical milk run across the pacific and now find ourselves in the Philippines. It's been great journey with sights and people to remember for a life time. If any of you new sailors have any cruising questions send them our way but be advised that when sailing these waters we don't always have internet connections so your messages may go unanswered for a while. I'll be in touch -

Welcome aboard

You have a interesting boat. Is she really as fast as the stories tell?

Greetings from Warszawa

Tomasz

The Fastpassage 39 may have been considered fast by the late 70's standards but compared to the boats of today she isn't. But she is strong and smooth and for an ocean cruiser that's just what you want. I have heard of one Fastpassage getting a 200 mile day but for us so far the best is 168. But if you do the math that's 7 knts for 24 hrs. and that's not bad at all. Just don't try to compare her to a cat.

We are not talking the round the can race here.
For me the boat of 40 ft. able to clock 150 nm daily runs sustained is well worth to be called Fastpassage
Just curious - what were Your average daily runs on longer ocean passages?

Re: New member but old cruiser

I would like to think that 150 knt. miles is our target but to be honest I would have to say it's closer to 130 for a average. We have done a lot of days in the 150's but we have also done a ton in the 120's as well. It really depends on the wind. What direction, the strength and the swell direction means a lot as well. Our crossing from the Galapagos to the Marquesas was a sweet down wind sail the whole way but our sail from the Ninigo Islands in PNG to Palau was a mix bag or squalls, wind on the nose and to finish it all off a sweet 2 days of wind from the rear quarter. But it was a 900 mile crossing that took us 9 days so you do the math. It's not all fun sailing out there, be ready for that 40 knt. squall or those days of no wind at all. But getting there is the goal, how you get there is up to you.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good thing that cruising is not a race. I don't think I could stand the pressure.
