@ Cal 30

I think once you get a good taste of the sea it never leaves you. I am also struggling with working out how things on my boat work. In a way this is half the fun? I am actually enjoying getting back into some hands on work and the self-sufficiency aspect.

Just wondering where you are located? I have read and seen bits and pieces of the American fisheries and it would be nice to know where those boats fit in.

That is very true I always had a yearning to get back to it.
The boats were built in Port Angeles in Washington. They were salmon trawlers, used on the pacific cost. I built boats in the winter and fished in the summer. No social life, I was either in school, working in the shop or fishing. Life back then pretty much sucked.

That reminds me of a story my brother related about a young fellow having an auto accident in front of his house and wanting to use his phone. My brother, even older than I, had an old rotary dial phone. The young guy had to ask him how to use it. Very funny!
Back to sailing! Do you have a rotary dial phone on your Cal 30? Had to have something about your boat in this story to make it relevant to Cruisers Forum.
regards,

Here’s a photo of a similar and typical trawler I took this morning at Newcastle NSW Australia. The gantry is either off for repair or it is being decommissioned. As fish stocks decline we are seeing the harbour have more visitors like the second ship the super yacht Athena.
