New Cruiser Ray

Helo - My name is Ray Potter. I am a resident of Oakdale, CA. I have been asked to deliver a 50' Symbol from San Diego to San Francisco. I have 10+ years of inland boating experience on the San Francisco Bay and Sac Delta, but not much open water time aside from a short jaunts on the Pacific out of San Diego. In addition to the books, guides and charts that I have aquired, I am also enrolling in a weather and Coastal Navigation class. I will also put in some ocean hours prior to departure. I am here to gain as much information as possible to prepare for this trip.

Hi Ray, Had to respond as a former resident of Oakdale. Is the H bar B still a good place to stay out of on rodeo weekend? Welcome to the board and good luck finding information. I think there are a lot of power boaters here too.

The H bar B still stands and gets pretty wild on rodeo weekend. Thanks for the welcome.

Aloha Ray,
Welcome aboard! It appears you'll be doing all things possible to prepare yourself for the journey. Most folks wait for weather windows to help them with that transit. I have only experience winds out of the Northwest so waiting for a South wind or calm might help you. I know you'll be powering but it does help not pounding through the waves and fighting currents kicked up by winds.
Kind regards,
JohnL

That's cool, Ray, used to be a semi-dangerous place for a long-haired boy like me. . . . Glad you are here.

Ray,
Find someone to go with you who has already sailed uphill between San Diego and San Francisco. After passing Point Conception, it has the potential of being a very rough ride with very few sheltered places to pull into.

Try looking online in the Latitude 38 crew list. http://www.latitude38.com/crewlist/crewlisthome.html

We may lay up before heading around point conception to await better conditions. Thanks for the advice.

This will be the relaxing part of the journey. We may pull into Catalina for a day or two. We really want to enjoy a few days below the Point while we watch the weather. I will certainly keep you in mind as we will need all of the experience we can muster. Thanks

Hi Ray, You're not planning to make the trip by yourself are you?

I'm an Advanced Pilot in the United States Power Squadrons and I would highly recommend their courses. Try this link: USPS Squadrons & Districts
