Re: Making the Leap From Lakes To the Bahamas

Good advice here, particularly from SV Lift.

You can check florida craigslists from wherever you are. Suitable boats up to 30 feet or so are available for under 10k. Haul out to check for any underwater problems and paint the bottom. Add a bimini (vital), dinghy, new batteries, solar panel, handheld gps, explorer charts, autopilot, and whatever else you like. Sail/anchor around florida for a few months to shake out and repair any problems. It's easier and cheaper in florida than the bahamas.

Then pick a nice day and cross the gulfstream..
