Lurker / New Sailor

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to sailing, lurked here for a few years, tried to take some sailing lessons locally but had a horrible time with wind (none) and job schedule so I... bought a boat.

I had a decent instructor and know the basics, just only really got out on the water once or twice. Last year I bought a Catalina 27 with an inboard Universal Atomic 8.

I took it out a few times last summer, but never raised a sail, this year I hope to actually sail it. I'll probably be posting in the engine/maintenance thread because although I'm somewhat mechanically inclined I have not done anything with the motor and am concerned about it's reliability.

I'm in Victoria, BC

Victoria has lots of wind if you just get out into the strait. Are you sure you have an 8? Most boats of that vintage came with a Universal 4. I am coming through Victoria this summer- want me to pick you up somewhere around the entrance to the Strait and sail you to Sidney? That aught to give you a good idea of how the sails work. Love the 27, good design for seas.

Thanks for the offer, might take you up on that.

Yes, it is an Atomic 4, I hadn't even heard of an Atomic 8, not sure why I typed that, but I can't edit the post now.

I'm actually moored near Mill Bay which I think will be a great place to learn, and start making my way around SaltSpring and the other islands.

Yeah, I go by there whenever I go to the gardens. That should be a good place to learn. Nowdays I head up to Port McNeil before I start relaxing, too many people in the bottom of the island.
BTW, for your first project (unless you really like gas inboards) I would think about dumping the universal and getting an outboard. Easier to maintain, and unless you are looking for trouble in the Georgian Strait you probably won't need it.
