Looking to Volunteer for a Crew in 2011

I'm in the Chicago area and I am interested in volunteering for a skippers crew in the Great Lakes Area for a week to10 days to gain some experience. It was suggested that before I buy my first sail boat that I take classes and volunteer; I've signed up for classes in March, now I'm looking for crew opportunities locally? I have no water experience but I am eager to learn....going to be taking classes and reading everything I can get my hands on, and learning from you guys....any help and direction on this would be greatly appreciated!

Also interested in shorter weekend stints...anything to get me out on the water?
