Looking for a cruising boat in Croatia

Hello,
We are asking the wise what brand of sail boat we should shop for. We plan on sailing the Meditteranean area and have been advised to purchase a boat in Croatia or Greece. We will live aboard 6 mo. of the year and need advice on a dependable, sturdy, low maintenence sailing vessel.
Thank you so much,

Re: Looking for a cruising boat in Croatia

Boats are abundant and cheap here in the Med. if you're from the U.S., you now have a currency exchange advantage of nearly 25 percent compared to last year. Your budget and size requirements would be helpful before any meaningful advice can be offered.

A catamaran would be ideal if you plan on spending most of your time at anchor. If that's the case, you'd also need a watermaker and generator, but on a cat there's plenty of space for solar panels. Look at a Lagoon catamaran if you can afford one.

As Kenomac suggests.. a Cat if you can afford one that suits your personal needs.. otherwise go for a Beneteau.. wide beam and shallow bilged.. a lot of calm or light winds in the Med usually.. tho this years been an exception with Mistrals and Tramontanas sweeping down every 3-4 days..
But stay awy from the classic deep bilge, narrow beam heavy cruisers.. they're for Oceans not puddles..

Re: Looking for a cruising boat in Croatia

Check with EuroMarine in Dubrovnik. They probably have an idea on where you can get what you want at a reasonable price. They are Jeanneau dealers and we had some work done there and it was very very good and very reasonable. They also charter boats and we watched them maintain the fleet and it was first class.

With the strong dollar right now it may be a good time. As for a cat remember that in marinas cats pay 1.5x what a mono pays and some places simply do not have a space for them.

good luck

Re: Looking for a cruising boat in Croatia

Thank you for your responses.Very helpful. We are looking for a single hulled sailboat to cruise the Mediterranean during the warm months. Would like approx. 14 meters, and our budget is approx. $75,000. Something easy to sail, sturdy, dependable, low maintenence. We have been looking at Bavaria 44 or 46. We will also will look at the Benneteau. My husband and I sailed 40 yrs ago, and are excited for out future plans.
Thank you for this forum!

Re: Looking for a cruising boat in Croatia

When we were looking for our boat in the price range as well, we continued to seek out heavier displacement boats for their size so that they would have a smoother ride. We continued to find and like the center cockpit Gulfstars. We settled on a sloop for easier sailing and less ongoing cost for maintenance. MI don't know how many of these are for sail now in the Med but I know many people have sailed them across the Atlantic to the Med so they may be for sale there as well.

We have lived aboard our Gulfstar for over two years and love her. We sailed her along the US Gulf coast from Florida to Texas and refit most of her inside as well as giving her new paint from the toe rails to bottom paint.

We are regretfully selling our Gulfstar at this time. It is worth taking a look at and seeing if you get some ideas for projects you may want to do on something you do find (full blog of most of the projects we did as well)
If you would be interested in looking at her., below is a link to her listing, feel free to Private message me or you can contact Carolyn at the link included. I would be happy to discuss Gulfstars as well if you had questions about them.

Gulfstar 43 sloop - great live aboard cruiser

We will not be in Croatia until October of 2016, but would love to see your Gulfstar. I did not see a link in your thread.
Thank you

How strange. I will put the links below in plain text so you can copy and then paste them into your browser

The listing and photos is here
1978 Gulfstar 43 Sloop sailboat for sale in Houston

The blog page is at the link below. You can go to the projects page and some of them are listed there. The rest are just sort of scattered in and amongst the blog entries but almost all have phots and some with videos too.
Dreams of that "Last Affair"

Re: Looking for a cruising boat in Croatia

Are there independent inspectors to inspect a vessel when we decide to purchase in Croatia?

I think there are. Try contacting the marina in Dubrovnik as they have great insight and knowledge on what is available. Nice helpful folks also.

Re: Looking for a cruising boat in Croatia

Here are some local sites in croatia where you might look at the boats to get the some idea of what is on offer and the prices they are listed at.

Generally private ads but some charter companies also list their for sale ads here.

Jedrilice - oglasnik Njuskalo.hr

Specialized/charter sites:

Pivatus rabljena plovila - polovne motorne jahte, brodice, jedrilice na prodaju

Velika ponuda polovnih i novih jedrilica za prodaju u Hrvatskoj

Seilbåt e za prodaju u Hrvatska | Boatshop24

New and used Jedrilice za prodaju u Hrvatskoj

I have absolutely no connection to any of these sites just trying to be helpful
