Just Started My Master Plan

Hello everyone,

Just started my Basic Keelboat course up here in NJ and wanted to say hi. I'm pretty determined to start working towards my eventual dream of cruising for extended periods. I am pretty young (20's), fresh out of college and been working a wonderful first job all in hopes of being able to buy a great ocean going yacht eventually.

I plan on completing my Basic Keelboat, Coastal Cruising and Bareboat all within this year.

I believe that within 2-4 years I should be able to purchase an "ocean going" (mostly looking at Island Packet) yacht of suitable live-aboard size for two people. The plan is then to cruise for 1-2 years to wherever the wind takes us.

Been reading this forum for quite awhile and I figured it was time for me to register.

All plans have a beginning and it sounds like you have picked a good way to begin. Once you start sailing you only get better You can meet more sailors and start to better understand the boat you hope to get. The more you learn the easier it will be to know what you really want to do and how you want to sail.

All your course work should still be a lot of fun. In the end it all is supposed to be fun so try to do your best to have a lot of it.

Welcome aboard. Sounds like a good plan. There are plenty of threads on budgeting and the like. I think that it would be a good idea to sail on lots of different types of boats before deciding what type of boat you want to buy. Good luck with the plan and keep us posted.

Welcome aboard.

We are also in our twenties (me 29) and we recently finished our Basic Keelboat certification last week. This upcoming weekend we are starting Basic Cruising certification courses. We are going to complete our Bareboat Cruising in October after our wedding

Your plan is very similar to ours, so about all I can add is good luck. Hopefully our sailing paths will cross ways in two years when we finally hit the big blue.

Alrighty, just got my basic keelboat cert. this past weekend. I'm thinking about joining the yacht club so that I can get some more time on the water. Would like to get about 25 hours more of sailing under my belt before going for the coastal cruising course.

Awesome, thanks for the invite. I am up in Montclair (2 hour drive) but if I am ever down that way I'll give you a heads up. Thanks again.
