My name is Pat and Im 21. My friends call me Party Pat, that's a different story. I have zero sailing experience, beside one afternoon on a Sunfish, as a passenger, a few years ago. However, I have recently rethought much of my life, and I believe that a life involved in sailing, the sea, and world travel would make me happy. I have realized that the successes others wish for me, won't make me feel satisfied or accomplished. I enjoy good drinks, great laughs, and better nights, and don't worry about incomes, or degrees, or impressing anyone else.

I have come to this forum to gain knowledge and wisdom from the members here. I am sure I will have many questions down the road, but as for right now, I just want to know: How can I learn to sail, cheaply?

Welcome PP. The easiest way to learn to sail cheaply is drop into the local yacht clubs and ask about crewing on some races. Most yacht owners struggle to get crew so it's not a hard task. Take some little cards with your name and phone number and details of what you want to do..looking to crew .. And stick them on the club notice boards. Read up on the sail basics as much as you can beforehand so you have half a clue. When someone offers you a crew position, try turn up early to help out, meet the other crew etc, and try stick around afterwards to help pack up. Even if you don't know what to do, it's appreciated and pretty soon you will know and get more offers. Most new crew will be told to sit on the side of the boat and change sides when the boat tacks. It's a no brainer but don't worry, after a while they will let you pull on some lines as well. Have fun! Keep us updated on your progress.

Sometimes local organizations such as community colleges, sailing clubs, even the YMCA offer inexpensive learn to sail courses. Highly recommended if you can find one. Tons of books available on the subject. Have fun!
