I bought a yacht on eBay

G'day all... I was showing a mate how to place a bid on eBay, and nobody placed a bid after me.
... GUESS WHAT?
I am now the owner of a Manitou 32 ketch... an Australian design built in the mid to late 80's.

Re: I bought a yacht on eBay

I contacted the broker selling it, thought about it for 2 days after the bid, then today I decided I wanted it.
Here's the link to the auction... $7,155 AUD

Re: I bought a yacht on eBay

Well congratulations you now have a yacht. Interesting layout, but as you said in another post you wanted to live aboard and it could be a good layout for someone single to live on board.

Can't see any sails in the photos, see if the owner has them before the deal is complete and guess you need to go shopping for a new engine. Do you know what engine is currently fitted in the boat even if it doesn't work. Might be cheaper to overhaul it depending on its condition and if spares are still available.

I have not seen it yet... needs motor fixing, and general maintenance, I think.

The broker has the sails (in good condition) in storage, as for living... I'm just on 70 years old, and live alone. The engine appears to be seized, its a Volvo about 20hp.

Got it for AUD$7,155 may or may not be cheap... HEY, I bought a new electric pushbike 4 months ago, that cost me just on $3,000.

Motor needs repair or replace.

Re: I bought a yacht on eBay

Is it far from you?

If its an early volvo MD series then probably start again. A 200x series better and could be worked on. a 2020 engine would be even nicer but unlikely in a 1980s boat.

Its in Sydney Harbor, about 5,000 miles away. I can get mooring quite cheap being a pensioner (about $350 a year if one is available).
I can't move it to Darwin until the cyclone season is over... after the end of April.

You purchased a boat located 5,000 miles away with a seized up engine sight unseen without a mooring?

Personally, I wouldn't give the guy any money until you see the boat first hand, then get out of the deal if you discover a money pit. It looks like a bad deal to me at 12,000 miles away.

Isn't an eBay bid final and binding?

No. You can get out of the deal if the item doesn't measure up to what's described.

Or, by not paying. The customer is always right on eBay. It's not published eBay policy, but in reality, that's the way it is.
