Husband Is a Skipper - Where Is He Dragging Me ?

So the husband wants to sail the Caribbean for a year.....HELP! Yes I'm going but the fun is just beginning....gotta buy a sailboat....38 ft and live in it for at least a year, then hang out on the Pacific Coast and live off the dock until our next adventure....are we being realistic????

I'm actually looking for advice about this, has anyone out there done this before and where do you recommend I start my research?

Yes we have done what you are going to do and it is realistic. This is as good a place as any to start your reseach... Anything from cooking, anchoring, maintenance, docking, finances, you name it you can find it here. Or at the least someone will be able to answer your questions and steer you in the right direction. You could do no better than check out the Women Afloat threads in the main index.... there's a lot of female oriented experience there and a lot of lady's like yourself have passed through... good advice/blogs...
Happy reading... its not that bad... if he's a nice guy he'll take you in gently.. first ankle deep then to your knees... etc, etc...

You didn't mention what kind of sailing experience you've had so will advise some sailing classes if you haven't had them.

velma--you will LOVE it. the caribean is sooooo beautiful. warm water and sunshine. perfect. mebbe we will meet --i am aiming that direction myself, from sin diego...ASAP...sail a lot of other peoples boats before buying one yourselves.
i will be sailing formosa 41, which i have owned now for a coupla years. most folks like the more modern boats---is something that is individual--and you never know h0w a boat acts until you try it. welcome and smoooth sailing

Great resource here and a lot of experiance on these boards.
It's a different way of life you are looking at with it's own rare pleasures trials and tribulations.
Research (plenty of great books to read!) and ask ask ask
Find some folks to sail with. Do a Charter for a week. Gotta find out how it suits ya... what you want from the experiance and where you see yourself fitting in etc etc but it can be done.

Just remember, you are not the fisrt, nor will you be the last to throw off all the mooring lines to the hard. The way you'll do things will change, but life will be a bit simpler.

As far as the Carib... I haven't found an island down there I didn't like. Each have thier good points and their bad points. But IMO, the good far out weigh the bad!

Actually we are from the mid west, Alberta to be exact. My husband grew up on the prairies but has aspired to the ocean. I’m actually taking a basic cruising course in the west coast this spring and right now I am doing a coastal navigation course. My husband has me learning all the rigging terminology as well. He has given me homework to last a month…lol

I've been sharing our plans with family (non-ocean goers) and mostly they have been encouraging. The only negativity I've received is from my younger sister who thinks I've finally lost it....well she could be right but she could be wrong...right?

velma--i have a younger sister, also--she has always thought me "off" i think--LOL---but she benefitted from all my downsizing--had some awesome furniture antiques --heirlooms-- she owns now.... i keep in touch with mine on fb-- closer now that we were prior to my decision to leave for sailing.

i wonder if giving her my heirloom furniture made any difference with this..(jk)
