Go for it. Be prepard for shocks of the financial kind, and then there are the after shocks..hmm those never stop ya just get used to em.
Are you boat shopping down in Clear Lake area? What kind of boat are you looking for?

Yes we are shopping in Clear Lake. Don't know what boat yet, something over 27' that has character, and sails well.

You are describing a Cape Dory

There is one for sail over at Seabrook ship yard that has some minor Ike damage, you may be able to get her for a good price. From what I saw she only needs new stanchions, that is, as far as damage from the storm, she may need other work.
You are in a great town to boat shop, over ten thousand boats in our area. Take your time, the right one will come along.

The Gulf 27, I like those boats, though some of the tankage and hardware can be a bit undersized (chainplates etc.). I think she is at marina del sol, I will ask a friend who lives there if he knows anything about her history (how she did with IKE).

The Cape dory 27 is at Watergate near my old pier, I think the CD are great, this one looks pretty rough but those boats were built so well you really cant go wrong with em. (IMHO) **they are asking too much for her though**.

I think Karma (CD28) is a really great boat, she will sail much better than the Gulf but may not be as comfortable. The asking price is crazy high (35? did I see that right?).

To put it in perspective I bought my 30 ft ('81) CD with new volvo diesel MD2020 for less than 20. BUT my baby needed a lot of work, nothing structural (except a new bowsprit), she had very little gear and needed major cleaning (of the major kind!) Roach infested, I think there was even a rat or two. I needed to take a hose to her interior and throw out all her cushions, curtains etc. I always thought I paid too much for her, but when ya fall in love ya fall in love. I have lived on her for 1 1/2 years and I can't help but smile when I look around at my little home, she is so pretty.

There are a bunch of great deals floating around, I will put my brain to it now that I have a better idea of the boats you guys like. I'll pm you if I see anything.

Anything you can find out about the Capital Gulf 27, named La Brissa, currently at Sealake yacht sales would be appreciated. I think the current owner is David Mallett.
This will be our learning boat so tankage isn't a big concern, yet. We are trying to get into this cheap. If we stick with it we could move up to something like a pacific sea craft, cape dory, or some other full keel, later. After the morgage is payed.
Oh and the wife wants a wheel, not a tiller, and a bimmany is a must.

Just ran into the newport while dock walking, she is over at watergate brokerage dock. She looks good, I didn't get aboard to check her decks, but she looks like a good starter boat. There is a Newport on the same dock, cant remember if she is tiller or wheel, she will sail better than the gulf. The owner (newport) is anxious to sell, I'd check her out too.

Great day for a walk, wasn't it?
If you would like to take another walk, check out what may be a soft spot just in front and starboard, of the starboard front window. There are no through hulls in the immediate area so I'm puzzled. Tell them I asked you to check it out if they ask what your doing. Pat's our guy there.

We did checked the 28 newport. All is very nice inside and out, except the floor which is horible. Looks like they put a single layer of glass over the teak and holly just to hold it together and flat.

I'm told the hull on the newport is exactly the same as the gulf, which may be true. they also made a shallow draft version though, so we will see if we haul it out.
