Hello

New member here. I live in the UK and own my Jeaneau Sun Oddysey 34.2 that I keep in Fethiye, Turkey.

Ex charter boat that I have owned for 2 years. Bought her off Ebay!!

We use for a few holidays a year with family and friends.

Last visit last week, lifting out for the winter on Monday.

Look forward to visiting this forum as much as I can.

How was the experience of buying a boat on eBay? I assume you did a personal inspection and survery priot to closing or was the price so low you took the boat as is, sight unseen?

The boat was on eBay as a classified ad so I wasn't in a bidding war sight unseen. The boat was based in Fethiye. I contacted the seller and he happened to live only 10 miles away, ex headmaster who I got to know and trust quite well. We visited the boat for a trial and sight of a recent survey. We did a sea trial with him and stayed on the boat with him for a few nights before comitting. Comparing prices with other similar ex charter vessels and after a bit of haggling I got the boat at what I consider a very good price. An agreement was continued with 2 Turkish brothers looking after the boat (ex sunsail employees) and they do all the maintenance, cleaning, laundry, winterising and preparing the boat for our vists. They are also very good friends now and we enjoy visiting their house and family in Turkey.
So I feel was lucky with my 'eBay' purchase.

Sailing in Turkey is very easy for a relative novice like me!

The marinas, anchorages and area is vast and very beautiful. Crystal clear seas, great weather and very safe. We have met Turtles and Dolphins, caught Tuna during our sailing holidays.

Short hop over to the Greek islands but hundreds of coves and bays to explore, some with restaurants only accessible by boat, some with no other boats around.

The gullets can be a bit annoying and they make it clear they do not respect right of way rules whether you are under sail or not!

So still a lot more exploring the coast of Turkey for me until we decide to move on

In what respect is your query on import duty. Our boat was based in Turkey when we bought her.

Must admit to taking some electronics in our flight luggage that strictly speaking should have been declared for import duty, otherwise import duty has not affected us

If your boat is a foreign flagged boat (foreign to Turkey) and you sail the boat to Turkey then no import duty will apply (as far as I know)

You can keep and leave your boat for up to 5 years before further permission is required.

You will need a transit log that you can arrange yourself or use a marina agent. The transit log is renewed annually and penalties ARE applied if it lapses (been there)

extract from rules:
Foreign-flagged yachts, on condition that they are sailed by their owners once every two years, can remain in Turkey up to five (5) years without a requirement for any permission. You can leave Turkey by other means of transport during this period after you leave your yacht at a marina or a moorage licensed by the Ministry of Tourism.

I'm a yorkshire lass, I lived in Wakefield for a few years as a child, in Coxley Valley, Horbury.

Now I have moved further north, living aboard our boat in Hartlepool marina.

We originaly saw our boat on ebay as a classified add. But the sale was through the broker, who had placed it.

Find yourself up in Hartlepool, give us a call

Small world, I live in Horbury!
Visited Hartlepool marina recently, by accident! Was up there on business and saw the signs, went to have a walk round.
Thought it was very nice and they have obviously spent a bit of money on the marina and surroundings, looked great.
