Today I am not a sailor in the true sense of the word, but a power boater. I never really owned a sail boat, but used to sail quite a bit on the Great Lakes with my father and friends, and I loved it. But with the busyness of life, raising a family and being a self employed business owner, I had very litle time to be on the water.
Then it all changed and because of health issues I had to retire and ended up in the 1000 Islands. My wife had only been in a boat smaller than a cruise ship once and I knew because of that and my health, there was no way I could handle a sailing vessel, but I could handle a power boat. And with training I might be able to have my wife help crew. After 3 years she still refers to the lines as ropes sometimes, and many times when we come in to dock and there are people standing waiting for our dock lines, she'll be too busy telling them about some part of our recent trip and I'll need to remind her to "throw them the line."
Our current boat is a Carver 2767 Santego mid-cabin. It is a nice boat to cruise in with a comfortable fly bridge and a nice sized cabin for the 2 of us.

I have been reading many posts and enjoy hearing about people and their travels.

Welcome to the Forum.
I often find myself the only sailboat in a raft-up. But you know what, on a full moon July or August night, with a 10knot breeze, some-one will say, lets go for a sail, and they all look at me.
Thats when you know that any boat can be the vehicle to good friends.

In a couple of the anchorages, there are both sail and power boats rafted up. It's fun listening to sailors talk about how different it is to sail the river than open water. Some of the power boaters, never having been on a sail boat....my wife for one, can't get over that the wind blows 90% of the time from the west, but they can still sail towards the west....

I've tried to explain tacking to my wife at least a hundred times and she just doesn't get it. I'm thinking about asking one of our sailing friends to take her out for a day. But the moment the boat lists 5% she'll freak....LOL

There's an ap for that: See Multihull Forum.

Really, that the wife will enjoyably boat with you puts you way ahead of the curve. I'd install bow and stern thrusters and let her chat with the bystanders to her heart's content while you're patiently waiting to dock.
Then, maybe over the course of the whole summer, you can teach her to run the boat, one tiny sneaky step at a time. Empowerment.

I actually live just west of Brockville, near Long Beach. I keep my boat in Ivy Lea.

But thanks to all, it is a great forum.

This is the Cruisers Forum, not the sailers forum. So power boats are good here. Besides, some of us have both.

So, welcome aboard! And it's good to know you're not freezing your az off up north, like some of us here.

No actually, it's a bit on the warmer side today......-9C or 16F. This has been a brutal winter, record snow and cold temps.
But no my az is still warm........LOL

Re a sailors forum: It seems to me that 90% of the people on here sail, or am I missing something?

That's right, there is more then one long beach!

And not all in California. My mistake, over looked the Brockville part.
Well you probably have a heater on your boat.
