Thanks for allowing me to join as a new member. I am living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. If ever any of the members like to vist Malaysia, please email to me if I can offer any assistance.
I have just ordered a New Hunter 33 and the boat will be here sometimes in early July. I seek some advice how to rig a new boat(putting up the mast). your advice is much appreciated.

Thank you very much for the HUnter's owner manual. Its a great help to read in advance and in preparation for the boat to arrive. I have been sailing for 6 years in a Macgregor 26X, it is a great little boat to start with.

So how is the cruising in Malaysia? How is it for foreigners to visit by boat? I just looked up Kuala Lumpur in Wikipedia, it looks beautiful! I would love to see the Petronas towers one day

Visiting Malaysia is never been easy. They are many visitors, mainly from England, Australia, Kiwis, European and American. The weather is warm all year around, the exchange rate is in your favour, that is 3.2 is to 1 US dollar. The food and shopping are cheap, berthing is the lowest among the Asian countries. I am 3 hours away by car and 45 min. by air from Singapore Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia. Beautiful country, alot to see and cost of living is one of the lowest in Asia. Plenty of Marina, so you have no problem with berthing. Do pay a visit to Malaysia and you will not regret it. If you do need further information please do to write to me. All for now. When my new boat arrive, my wife and I will do costal sailing around Malaysia and neighbouring countries. I have just obtain my sailing licence from RYA. We will encounter night sailing whether I like it or not. My question is: How to go about and what is the best way to learn or practice? Your reply is much appreciated. Rgs: Sonnysoh

The best way to learn would be to take an experienced person out with you who is willing to teach you. Are there any sailing schools in your area or yacht clubs with members who would be willing to help?

Welcome aboard, Sonny, and congratulations on your new boat. I am still working on my RYA certification while waiting for my boat to arrive. In the meantime, I have taken the advice from some of the forum members, and that is to crew on races. I realise your boat arrives in July, but at least you will get plenty of practice on the water. As an example, after swapping spinnaker with the genoa a few times in just one race, you start to get the hang of things very quickly. Besides, it is fun, fun, fun!

Last Christmas, we stopped over in Malaysia on our way to visit our son in New York. We hired a car and drove south to check out Amiral Marina. Looks like great place to hang out, but is rather empty, which is good news for boat owners, I guess.

Hi sonnysoh,

I am full of envy as Malaysia is about my favourite place that I have been to.

Very friendly people, great scenery, food and of course exchange rate.

Cant wait to get back soon before the end of the year and when I eventually finish my boat I will be coming up for as long as I am welcome cruising bacwards and forwards between Langkawi and Sabah with a bit of other stuff as well.

There is a good race week in Langkawi in January, It may be of interest even just to pace yourself against other boats(keeping out of their way) and meeting sailors in the area.

Welcome to the Cruisers Forum.

It’s a small world indeed. My boat is berthed in the Admiral Marina in Port Dickson at this time and I’m planning on flying down sometime in May or June. When do you expect delivery of your boat?

If you need contacts for help with your Hunter, just let know. There’s lots of good friends working there.

And I agree with the above posters: Malaysia is one of the most beautiful countries anywhere.

I look forward to seeing you down there sometime.
