I actually joined this forum to do research
for a writing project
... but someday I'll learn to sail.
I'm a resident of eastern Iowa... not a big sailing area, but there's always boating
on the Mississippi
or local lakes (or boat rentals when we're on vacation
... dad likes boats and fishing). But that's all motor
boats or paddle-powered boats (I prefer kayaks to most other small watercraft)... and mostly on small bodies of water
I'm not completely unfamiliar with the ocean. During my undergrad, I was fortunate enough to spend a week touring the Galapagos
, and we had a couple of days of moderately rough seas (which I got to experience again in Australia
, we did a dive trip on the GBR right after a big storm). Fortunately I'm not prone to seasickness... in fact, I kind of love waves as long as they aren't posing a safety
So the only time I've been sailing was in Australia
when a group of my friends chartered a boat for a day. Almost all of them promptly got horribly seasick so we spent most of the day anchored within sight of the beach we went to almost every week. I preferred the sailing portion of the day, myself.
