Greetings from central California. I have joined this community to find out about BVI multihull cursing. I'm not sure where to post my questions. If someone could point me the right direction I would be much obliged.

I assume you meant cruising and not "cursing." Did you want to do a charter?

One should always remember that the first letter in BVI stands for "Brit." What this means is that the preferred epithet in the BVI is "bloody," as in, "Hand me the bloody spanner, you bloody..."

You may be surprised to discover that multihull cursing in the BVI is not far different from monohull cursing. The singular difference is that a BVI monohull skipper, about to crash, will usually say, "Oh bloody hell!" while a BVI multihull skipper will only manage to get out, "Oh blooo...." This is because multihulls are faster, and therefore tend to crash before the cursing is fully developed. BVI multihull sailors have been known to be quite sensitive about this inherent problem in their boats' design.

Interestingly, BVI cursing is divergent from USVI cursing, where the usual pre-crash expletive sounds something like, "Oh shi+++!" This is a marked contrast from, say, cursing in French Polynesia, where the preferred pre-crash exclamation would be more along the lines of "Sacrebleu!" which is roughly the equivalent of the Americanism "dognabit."

When we were interested in purchasing a Privilege 39 catamaran, we flew to the BVI for a one week charter to see if we would like the catamaran. We enjoyed the BVI, and by the end of our charter, we knew that we wanted to purchase a Privilege 39 for our sailing trip around the world.

We chartered from Tortola Marine Services at Roadtown.

The BVI are a great place to charter a catamaran.

This is aswome, I killed two birds with one stone, not only did get a link for posting my questions, I now know how to properly curse prior to impact when cruising at the helm of a multihull boat. Woo, who would have ever thought. Now all I need to do is work on my dyslexia. No wonder it was so confusing when I was yelling Starboard Tack Starboard Tack at the line, opps.

Welcome to the forum Bob. Frankly, I initially thought that your use of the word 'cursing' was intentional - but then, some of us on this site are a bit gun-shy about owning multihulls.

It does indeed sound like a viable plan - keep us posted and when you have any questions, feel free to ask - no questions from 'newbies' are stupid, only some of the responses (like this one)!
