Hello, Sailing Chesapeake Bay

Hello,

I am Coast Guard Licensed for near coastal 9 yrs and only recently found the forum! Lurked a couple days and now I am converted.

I have a 40' C&C and have been sailing since 1979. I learned my sailing backwards, started with larger boat (with 46 ft Tartan) and then bought a 28 Irwin, and now after a number of project boats, have the C&C "Yellow Bird" just about ready for a distance run.

Lots of good people on this forum, based on the posts I have read. I am looking forward to meeting up with some in the future, while attempting not to anger anyone too much on the forum.
June 08 plans are for hoisting anchor and making way on "Yellow Bird", down and out the Bay and onward to warmer places.

It appears a lot of good (sailors) people are on this forum and the Chesapeake too. Yellow Bird is located just below Annapolis off the West River. I used to sail out of Havre De Grace, but like it better where I can go north or south. Sailed today up around the Bay Bridge for a little stretch, 72 degrees, the day before Thanksgiving.
Have a good one and don't get into any food fights.

welcome

We sail from Deltaville and are looking forward to meeting some of our fellow cruisers some day. Sounds like you had great sailing on Wed. We too hope to head south...maybe next winter. nancy

T-Day today and I managed to stay out of any food fights!

You will likely notice our boat if we are in the area, it has (true to it's name) bright yellow sides above black bottomed hull. This is hull #4 of the Crusader series CCA design. Love the boat, love the lines, but it has been 20 months work to get todays condition, best in probably 20+ years.

The plus side of working on my own boat, is if a problem occurs away from help or land, I most likely will know how to care for it now.

Maybe a raft up one of these days for forum Chesapeake, is in order?
Thanks for the welcome, Hawk

A displaced old Canadian, eh? Well thank you for the welcome Lancerbye.

Who knows, perhaps we will cross wakes one of these days, Pacific is in my plans, but not for a bit.

Ol' Blue is the same thread as Ginger, Yellow Bird but no.

No, "Ol' Blue" is the same vintage and design. I heard she was retired from racing now.
My boat is hull #4 same CCA design and manufacture, it was raced against (in their day) "Ginger", "Ol' Blue" and a few others. Hull #4 was initially named "Phoenix."

Your question brought to me the realization, I have personally been refitting this boat for 2 1/2 years now....ugh. I acquired it as sort of a rescue project; in an overly "deferred maintenance" condition.

History of these boats is "rich" from what I have learned from the many kind people who have stopped by, to look and talk. Many recall stories and races between them.
Thanks for asking,
HAwk

We're "newbes" ---have a 45 Sea Ray (sorry not sailing!)-- at Bay Bridge Marina. Have hired a captain to "oversee" us to Lantana Fl in Dec. Plan to head to the Bahamas around the 22 without the captain. Anyone know of anyone else going? Any good tips on routes? Thanks for any input!
