Hello Out There

I'm just starting. Going to Bar Harbor in August and would like to charter a boat for overnight.

Took my first lesson April 9 of this year. Two days and about 3 hours at night on a Morgan 38 in Galveston Bay. The Morgan seemed solid and well maintained but fairly primitive (no self-tailing winches or GPS).

I decided I wouldn't be comfortable doing a bareboat charter in a place I'd never been with just the one lesson, but I really want to sail Somes Sound. I thought about chartering the Morgan a couple of times but then I saw a time share program at a boat show.

I'm in the time share with a Hunter 36. The time share program included ASA 101 which was similar to what I had learned on the Morgan, but contrasting instructor styles helped me learn different things on each. After the the 101 course and a check-out sail with the instructor, I have had two day sails and one overnight at anchor. I plan to do two more overnights and at least two day sails before Maine so I should be ready.

I enjoy sailing very much right now. I will retire in two or three years and I'm thinking sailing could be a big part of my retirement.

not quite true ... I still consider myself a novice, who knows a bit more than just the basics (Atlantic crossing HR40 Sweden-Annapolis, delivery as captain Bahama's-Ft Lauderdale Columbia50 and a lot of local/Caribbean sailing trips) ...
onboard instruction, experience and common sence helps a lot ...

anyway, good luck, Jack and welcome to this board ...

Re: Hello Out There

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I enjoy learning, challenges and problem solving and it looks like that is a lot of what sailing is about. The socializing and solitude are appealling as well.

I like to travel and see new vistas and experience different cultures but I'm ready to return home after a week or two. That may change in retirement.
