I'm just starting. Going to Bar Harbor in August and would like to charter
a boat for overnight.
Took my first lesson April 9 of this year. Two days and about 3 hours at night on a Morgan
38 in Galveston Bay. The Morgan
seemed solid and well maintained but fairly primitive (no self-tailing winches or GPS).
I decided I wouldn't be comfortable doing a bareboat charter
in a place I'd never been with just the one lesson, but I really want to sail Somes Sound. I thought about chartering the Morgan a couple of times but then I saw a time share program at a boat show
I'm in the time share with a Hunter
36. The time share program included ASA
101 which was similar to what I had learned on the Morgan, but contrasting instructor styles helped me learn different things on each. After the the 101 course and a check-out sail with the instructor, I have had two day sails
and one overnight at anchor
. I plan to do two more overnights and at least two day sails
so I should be ready.
I enjoy sailing very much right now. I will retire in two or three years and I'm thinking sailing could be a big part of my retirement
