Hi all,
I just joined, I have a Catalina 22 now, but hope to be living aboard and cruising in about 10 years. So I figured I'd better get serious about learning about the reality of it, rather than just reading magazine articles, and my wife has alot of questions too.

I look forward to meeting people here. I live in Elmira, NY, and plan to put Serenity Now! in Keuka Lake this sailing season.

Welcome aboard! My first boat was a Catalina 22. Great boat! Mine was a fixed keel with a pop top. It was a good little sailer. If you have the pop top version make certain you have a way to secure the top in the down position when you go out in moderately rough weather.

What do you think of the Catalina 22 as a first boat for someone who will pretty much only be sailing (and learning) alone?

I chose the Catalina 22 as my first boat because it has a forgiving nature if I happen to make a mistake, the quality is good, the price was right and I could work on it myself very easily. It was perfect as a single-hander. I had a Johnson 6hp outboard but rarely used it because you could sail in and out of nearly anywhere. I did have to repair the rudder that was delaminating a bit along the seam where the two halves were put together.

The price I paid was $4500 in 1981 for 1976 model boat.

The Naval Sailing Club in Coronado used them as training boats and I think we had 5 of them if I remember right. I got check out on them and then taught lessons on them to the new folks in the club. I was really familiar with the boat and when I saw one for sale here in Hawaii I went to take a look. Even though I wanted a larger boat I decided to get the 22.
