hello guys my name is John. i recently joined this forum!

i joined this forum to help me in my search for the proper hull material in which to build my boat in. and just to talk to amazing people like you.

a little bit about me. i am 18 years old i grew up around boats but do not have to much experience on them. i have had a job since i was 13 and have put into savings over 80% of each paycheck. i decided not to buy a car so i could buy a boat! in the past 6 months i have been extensively researching boat designs and boat designers. i have decided to build new then buy used. i am currently finishing up college and will with any luck be enlisting in the coastguard and be off to basic training by the end of December! ill be posting more questions about hulls and materials in the appropriate forums.

I love how punctuation and capitalization are such a big deal to some people. The best part is when that becomes its own internet meme, and people who don't actually care about it start commenting on it.

I had high school finished at age 14, so I'm glad to hear someone else is working ahead of the curve and has a goal or two in mind. Good to see you posting, Samson

Aloha and welcome aboard!
It's good to have you here on the forum. Having gone through building and rebuilding I would recommend buy a sailable boat that needs some repair but nothing major. The reason is that you'll be able to sail immediately and you will save money in the long run. Building the hull is about one tenth the cost of the boat. The rest is finish and fitting out.

In the Coast Guard you will get a very large and fast boat on which to sail. Some of us will probably see you out there on the high seas.

Don't listen to these folks with punctuation issues. You're very understandable and in today's education system thats better than most. Meanwhile, where are you going to find time to build since you're going into the USCG ? Get "Backyard boat building" by George Buhler. It cuts thru most of the crap and is easy to follow. It also goes over different building materials.

Thank you guys for all the welcom notes. After reading on the forum for awhile you guys seem pretty cool. I started college at 15 and this is now my last semester. english has never been my strong point.

As for finding time to build the boat. I was hoping to be in and done with basic and A school already and with luck would have gotten an asignment 5 miles from home ( not a mama's boy) just that we have land and would have made building an option.

As it stands i have finished meps been signed scored 95 on asvab but have been delayed 11 months to go to basic training. yippie! at least i am signed that is the hardest parts these days they disqualify you for anything and everything at meps now a days.

so i have just been hanging out at the local marina started crewing with a buddie got me a sailing dinghy.

Welcome to the site, good luck on reaching those goals and hope one day to see you on the water.

I doubt others will flame the grammar - and don't be too hard on our Saucy Sailoress - I guess her teaching background led her to try and help out.

Lots of people think spelling / grammar is a bit like sailing / boatbuilding in that you can always get by ok - but if you can get it right - then why not.
