Hello from Victoria , BC ... No Wind Today

Hi,

My name is Jacqueline. I've lurked these forums for years and finally joined. I continued to lurk a while longer. Thought I'd finally take a moment to say hello and introduce myself.

I lived aboard and cruised (powerboat) for about 5 years and moved back onto land 2000-2001 (one of the hardest things I've ever done ;-) and have been trying to get back aboard ever since. Every aspect of living aboard and cruising touched me profoundly.

I've acquired an 25' Aleutka, cutter rig and twin keel. She's pretty sparse but I like her that way. I'm excited to outfit her the way I want.

My dream (haven't set the date/goal yet ;-) is to live aboard again and sail off to 'I don't care where'. I'm on Vancouver Island, so have some pretty nice cruising grounds to explore while I hash things out.

As I become more intimate with my boat I'm sure I'll have lots of questions and be seeking some of the wisdom of those in the forum that have gone before me. And maybe I'll be able to share some of my experience as well.

Welcome to CF.
We've got no wind and now more RAIN.
Will summer ever arrive?
At least we've got no tornadoes...

Welcome to CF Jacqueline!

Show us some pictures when you can.
I'm sure we'd all love to see your boat.

And yes, you do indeed have some good cruising grounds around you.

Re: Hello from Victoria, BC...no wind today.

Another welcome from a local.

Just wait a couple hours the wind will be back, along with the rain. July 5th is the transition day here. Then you have 6-10 weeks to get in all the fun.

I had a twin keeler once. They're great for shallow gunkholing, but getting up wind is a bitch. You just have to learn to run with the tides here in the Sound.

Re: Hello from Victoria, BC...no wind today.

True delmarrey. I lived in Seattle for some time and the weather here is quite similar. That's why I like it though.

We haven't had much of a spring up here I'm hoping the summer will be better... I've got some holiday time scheduled and I'm hoping to slip the lines and go sailing

delmarrey, any suggestions or guidance in how to best sail a twin keel would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Hello from Victoria, BC...no wind today.

Yeah, this has been one of those wet years, so far. It started last summer.

Being a twin you don't have much COR in the water when heeled so your going to go to weather more then normal keelers under sail, which makes pointing a false sense of direction.

Point up wind will most likely be 45º true heading due to the drift even though your actually pointing 30º. Your GPS will say one thing and the compass will be way off.

So, if you need to keep a schedule, motoring or going with the tide is your best advantage, up wind. If your out there just to enjoy the sail is doesn't matter.

Learn the tides, especially in the narrows and you'll do well. The nice thing is you'll be able to get real close to shore for anchoring out. No worry about crowded anchorages. And if you're too close you'll just be sitting on the bottom nice and level until the tide returns. Just watch your tides.

Welcome fellow Canuck.

You are in one of the best cruising grounds in the world.

I have been out three times already, for about a month's worth of sailing; once around the Island and once to Barkley Sound, plus some work around Sidney.

No wind at Victoria? That's the way I saw it last year. Isn't that one reason they invented trawlers?

Re: Hello from Victoria , BC ... No Wind Today

Thanks guys for all the warm welcomes!

DRS, you'll have to say Hi when you're here in July.

markpierce, that's what I'm getting away from ;-) Kidding...that's what I lived aboard and it's certainly not a bad way to go :-)

jackdale, I lived in Edmonton for 15 years and moving away was one of the best things I ever did ;-) Calgary's nice though.
