pirate Hello from Utah!

Hi everyone,

I am not sure where to begin, so here goes...

I live in Utah with my wife and four children. We have long dreamt of doing something with our lives, and we love adventure.

Recently, we decided to find a cheap, but blue-water worthy boat and live on it full-time. We hope in a safe harbor somewhere to learn how to operate the boat well, and then venture-out God-willing and see what there is to see!

Re: Hello from Utah!

Welcome aboard! Slow down a peg or two before considering buying a boat. Begin your adventure by learning seamanship basics (ASA 101/ASA 103 courses), then sail a few times as a "crew member". Try a few weekends out; find out if any of you get sea sick? Charter a bare boat a week at a time. If all goes well, come back and drop us a line. Old Salts, on here, will gladly advise you on your next stages. Let us know how you're progressing. Good luck!

Mauritz

Re: Hello from Utah!

Hullo! I'm a Salt Lake City resident myself. Are you looking to dock at one of our lakes or were you moving seaside? If you ever need crew here in the beehive state, I'm more than willing. Though I'll admit I've a lot to learn.
Best

Re: Hello from Utah!

Mauritz,

Thanks for the advise, but I already know I don't get sea-sick. I was a Merchant Mariner for nearly 10 years. I just don't have hardly any sail experience.

I come from a seafaring family, but the last time I sailed I was a teenager.

My paternal grandfather was a Master Oceans Unlimited, as was his brother, and one of his sons. Though all his sons were seamen at some level or other.

Nonetheless, I haven't been to sea in about 10 or 11 years ( I am guessing.)

It was some years before that when I had been on a boat with sails.

Re: Hello from Utah!

I'm from the Ogden area, if you need any help I'm looking to learn all I can before my girlfriend and I go to the islands and get our own live aboard.

Re: Hello from Utah!

Any of you guys/gals want a boat in Utah? I am rigging my Compac 23 right now, I have painted varnished and updated it over the last two years and will put it up for sale in a couple of days. Its a micro cruiser that acts like a big yacht in every way. I love it dearly but I just can't have two boats .
These two photos are of solo sailing on the Great Salt Lake and at the marina with my dingy.
