Hello from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes

Hi everyone. My wife and I just took delivery of a Morgan 462 ketch on the Gulf Coast. We're bringing it to Canada on its own bottom either through the inland waterway or the ICW. Been sailing for around 50+ years in everything from a 6' sailing dink to a gaff rigged ball headed schooner. At last count this current ketch is my 21st sailboat. All this means that I'm still learning and this trip will be a great first time learning experience for both my wife and I. I'll be asking for help in various corners of this great forum and will try to add my two cents when I feel I have something positive to add to a thread.

My heart felt congratulations and praise to and for the folks who built this fine site and moderate it so well.

With our best regards,

Paula & Calico Joe aboard the ketch "Odissea"

Welcome.
Not sure what you mean by the "inland waterway or the ICW".... same thing in my experience.

I think he means the inland waterwayS (aka, the river systems) as opposed to the Intra Coastal Waterway. He has another post about going up the Mississippi going, so I'll leave that idea alone here.

Re: Hello from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes

Sorry for the confusion guys but Valhalla has the right of it. I was referring to the Tenn Tom Mississippi as the inland waterway system as opposed to the Inter Coastal Waterway (ICW) that runs, for the most part, behind the barrier islands of the east and gold coasts

That thought never occurred to me simply because it ain't going to work.... well maybe it could be done but with 62hp in a boat that size it would be one helluva learning curve.

Re: Hello from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes

I've since found out that! So I'm changing the route to the GICWW to around Carabell Fl then offshore to Fort Myers and then off shore to Marathon. I'd appreciate any ideas/comments about this new route.

You could probably go across the Okeechobee from Fort Myers to Fort Pierce if the water is up it would save a lot of time if that is a consideration. Check draught and mast height

Might need a gallon of mosquito-be-gone and a couple of all-purpose alligator swatters.

Re: Hello from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes

As much as I'd like to, Boatpoker, I've got a 60' air draft and a 5'6" water draft. The railroad left bridge at Indiantown has a max clearance of 45' So... Guess it's off shore to Marathon.
