Greeting to all my fellow boaters. My wife and I are seriously thinking about selling out in FL and buying a bigger boat to live aboard so that we can spend the summers near our kids in Conn. and RI. Accutally that is how I found your forum, I was doing a serch for mooring and achoring regs in the New England area and found a forum about new anchoring regs in FL. Anyways greetings again to all and I hope to make some new friends.

Well interesting parallel. I am also in sunny (north) central Florida, just left my job in CT, daughter just finished school in RI and moved to MA. Hope to finish overhaul on my boat by next spring so I can spend a little more time up north.

Fortunately managed to save enough so we can keep the house and have a boat too. Only took 30 years.

I'm in Gainesville, about as far as you can be from the ocean and still live in Florida.

Our kids live in Groton and Westerly RI and so far all of the marinas that I checked out are way out of our price range, 100-125 per ft for slips and 50-75 for mooring bouys, I don't know If you have any suggestions for crusing on a budget, if you do I would certianly appriciate any suggestions. I think we will probably be swinging off a hook, but Idon't know how the locals are with transient boaters anchoring in there coves. or if there are any local regs that restrict anchoring. Unfortunately the area where our kids live is the home of Mistic Conn.

Marinas in New England all seem to be quite expensive. If you book a slip for the season it is a little more reasonable but still not cheap. I bought my boat in NY and kept it in RI for the summer. I found a mooring in Bristol for $1500 for the season. Down side, it was almost two miles from my mooring to the main harbor and the dinghy beach. Biggest problem was the high tides required dragging the dinghy wayyyyy up the beach or dragging it wayyyyy back down the beach at low tide. Parking in Bristol was restricted by the waterfront so had to park two blocks away.

If you do a little searching I think you could find a mooring on the west side of Narragansett Bay for the same or less and probably a better situation for the dinghy.

Also spent about a month anchored in the CT River across from Essex. No one seemed to care and a friend who lives in the area knew of no regulations or restrictions. But again the biggest problem there was finding a spot for the dinghy. Like Bristol I had to drag it up a beach, mud in this case.

Have you checked Activecaptain.com for researching marinas? It has a pretty complete and informative database covering the whole east coast.
