| Hello from Shanghai
Greetings from Shanghai! Just found this great board. From what I have seen, there is a lot I can learn here. I have been 'stranded' for a while now, but I am intending to change that. I am looking to build a Dix 43 in steel. Hope to start in early 2008. |

If you are building a boat then you'll need help and more advice than you can use. We can do that! Welcome aboard.

Shanghai is crowded indeed, and specially the traffic is getting worse by the month. I moved to China in 1994, lived in the South first. In Zhuhai and Guangzhou. I moved to Shanghai in 2000, and at present I am running a marine repair company. Let's meet up next time you come to Shanghai. Cheers, Andreas |

Now in my last month with the company who sent me to Shanghai. They may run me over there one more time, not sure yet. Starting a new job next month, no China with that gig. Been quit a bit to Shenzen the last few years, also Hong Kong and other hot spots. Trying to get out of the rat race to go sailing, but the Admiral would rather live in a house than on a boat. The boat is paid for, but not the house. Hence I work for to keep pay checks rolling in which keeps the Admiral happy. Perhaps I should trade her for 2 Chinese gals, about 24 years old. One that likes to cook and clean and one that loves boat maintenance. Then go sailing towards the horizon.... ![]() (Good thing the Admiral ain't reading these here bulletin boards, I'd be dead as a door-nail)

I'm headed to Shanghai early next year for a few months to work at a ship repair yard...something with a lack of good workmanship and attention to detail..... Currently in South Korea however.

'One who loves to cook and clean, and one who loves boat maintenance?' Jeez CSY Man, are you really sure you can't think of a third task for 2 x 24 year old Chinese ladies? And of course welcome Stranded Mariner, hope you find the board useful (as well as entertaining). Cheers JOHN

The Chinese yards have little experience with steel hull boats (most is FRP here), and there is in general very little attention to detail. After all China does not have a boating tradition. Having said that, there are a number of western run boat builders that would be right for my requirements. However they are fully booked. Meanwhile I found a company in Thailand that can help me. Sent them the 'study pack' with basic plans and drawings, and will go and visit them within the next few weeks. Thailand has a big advantage over China when it comes to the outfitting, because there is good local hardwood timber available for a reasonable price, plus the necessary skills. Meanwhile I am trying to get my head around the selection of systems (engine, electrical, steering etc.). Being a marine engineer helps, but on the other hand a yacht is definitely different from a commercial ship ![]() P.S. I spent some time in Hawaii in the early 90's. On Kauai to be exact. We installed the diesel power plant in Port Allan (Ele'ele) on the South Shore. I spent most of my weekends SCUBA diving or fishing, and had a great time. | |
