Hello from San Diego

Hi,

My wife and I went to a boat show last summer looking at offshore fishing boats. Very large, very expensive (even more than sailboats). But we started thinking "Hey there are no gas stations in the middle of the ocean." So we took a look at a few sailboats and got hooked.

Since then, we took an ASA 101 class in November. Sailed some capri 22's through the winter. Took the 103 class last weekend. Now looking to charter some 30 - 35 foot boats.

We are in the process of getting ready to buy a boat in that range to do some coastal cruising. Mostly Channel Islands and Northern Baja. Although I think that buying process will take some time. Maybe next year.

Long term we hope to buy a 40-50 size boat and cruise. (ahh someday).

Anyway, thats my stroy and I am sticking to it. I doubt I will be posting much (too new to know everything). But I will be reading a lot of the posts learning as much as I can.

Sea ya,

Aloha Reel,
You're in the right area to do a lot of sailing. I was stationed there for 3 tours (about 7years) and loved it. I sailed out of Coronado with the Naval Sailing Association which I think does not exist any longer.
If you do a lot of searching on this forum in different threads about different boats you'll see my recommendations for no longer than 36 LOD. Not all agree.
Hope you find what you're looking for.
Kind Regards,
JohnL

Welcome Reel Deep:

San Diego is a dream location to sail from. I've never done any overnight charters from there but know that there are some available. A trip to Catalina Island is great fun. Good luck with your adventures and keep us abreast of any chartering you do.

We were power boaters when we live in SD, but loved it. Since we had jobs and wanted to dive a lot, sail was not a good option from a time perspective.

Now we don't have jobs and sail is great.

Sorry about the fires on Catalina. It was a favorite destination. I hope a good quantity of the wildlife makes it. You will be surprised how fast the vegitation recovers.

Fair winds,

George

Welcome Reel,
San Diego is a great place to sail and I am sure you will enjoy it very much. We are currently in Orange County but will be heading back to San Diego this summer for a few weeks (I can't wait).
I am sure you will learn alot from this forum (I sure do).

Hey there!

We're on a Hans Christian parked in Point Loma. It's a great place to sail, although you will certainly have more time to develop your light weather sailing than your heavey weather style, there is some wind from time to time.

Send us an email if you need anything!
